Applications are invited for this part time post (0.5) with Learn Welsh - North West, Bangor University. This post will be available until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.

The duties will include supporting the staff of Holyhead High School to learn Welsh and to gain confidence in the Welsh language, and enable them to be confident to teach through the medium of Welsh.

Candidates should be educated to degree standard (or equivalent) and have extensive teaching experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible after 18 May 2026.

Overview

Learn Welsh North West at Bangor University is one of 10 providers of Welsh courses for the National Centre for Learning Welsh. Since the 1st of August 2016, Learn Welsh North West has been responsible for teaching Welsh to adults across the counties of Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy.

It offers provision for approximately 2200 individual learners throughout the three counties of north west Wales, and operates on a budget of around £2.1M. The teaching team includes 29 full-time or part-time staff and approximately 40 part-time tutors.

Main purpose of the role

Supporting the staff of Holyhead High School to learn Welsh and to gain confidence in the Welsh language, and enable them to be confident to teach through the medium of Welsh. Supporting the school to plan and map the progress of the staff's language skills across the range of Learn Welsh levels, and that over a specific period of time. Teaching a community class in the evening.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Tutor Will Provide The Following Service

Assessing staff's initial language levels (if necessary) and tracking their linguistic progress. Providing appropriate and suitable Learn Welsh lessons for individuals, small groups and classes in accordance with demand. Fulfilling the role of a language mentor, by providing advice to teachers and staff on their use of the Welsh language at work. Reaching an agreement with the school on a reasonable timetable that allows staff to commit to lessons. The post holder is expected to complete a Start to Teach Qualification: WJEC Level 4 Certificate for Tutors (if not already completed).

The School/Local Authority Will

Provide a point of contact for the tutor from the Senior Management team. Ensure that staff are aware of the offer and support. Ensure that staff are released to attend lessons, in accordance with the agreed timetable. Provide a suitable space for the tutor to carry out their work.

The post-holder will be expected to participate in performance reviews and development activities. Person Specification

Essential

A standard degree in any relevant field, An excellent educator with substantial teaching experience, Experience of advising and supporting learners to use the Welsh language effectively, Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Welsh. Desirable
