Sheffield City Council’s Housing Repairs Service carries out repairs and maintenance to over 50,000 Council homes.
This year, we are offering an amazing 12 Apprenticeship opportunities to launch your career in the trades services with a September 2026 start.
Requirements
- Wage: £19,180.80 a year
- Apprentice rate: £10.80 per hour in the first year
- 6 month probationary bonus payment
- Training course: Carpentry and joinery (level 2)
- Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (37 hours a week)
- Start date: Monday 7 September 2026
- Duration: 2 years

Responsibilities
- Under supervision, undertake and develop an understanding of the duties and responsibilities outlined below:
- Identify and undertake appropriate trade work tasks as directed
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to meet service priorities, work targets and plans
- Liaise with other employees, team leader/supervisor or managers as necessary to complete specified tasks and meet the required portfolio on-site evidence
- Carry out and complete work in line with relevant legislation, regulations or other standards and in a competent manner
- Ensure awareness and compliance with all risk assessments, safe systems of work and any other health and safety information, guidance or procedures related to work activities of the appropriate trade, and ask for clarification if not fully understood
- Complete appropriate health and safety paperwork/checks
- Ensure all accidents/near misses are reported to your team leader/supervisor
- Undertake all work/tasks in accordance with current legislation, British Standards, Codes of Practice and recognised industrial standards, and ensure any damage to the fabric of the property or building is minimised
- Receive, plan and complete job orders on time, following correct procedures to an acceptable standard
- Effectively use any relevant ICT equipment and information systems to effectively undertake duties
- Take good care of, and use correctly, all tools, equipment, personal protective equipment and any other issued resources
- Notify your team leader of any absences from work or college or any other associated issues
- Ensure compliance with all SCC Policies and procedures, particularly the Code of Conduct, the Social Networking Policy and Dignity and Respect at Work, to ensure behaviour standards are met
- Ensure compliance with the ICT Acceptable Use Policy, Data Protection Act and other relevant legislation
- Ensure understanding and compliance with all customer care and service standards
- Create, maintain and build constructive working relationships with team members, other staff, customers and the public
- Ensure compliance with any policies, procedures or other rules and regulations required by your College
- Adhere to and undertake all requirements of your individual training plan
- Follow guidance and instruction as directed by your team leader/supervisor/mentor at all times
- Ensure all relevant College documentation is processed and systems are completed in a timely manner
- Attend and actively contribute to all progression reviews and submit required site evidence to your training provider/college or assessor in a timely manner in accordance with your individual training plan
- Actively contribute in all reviews/progress and any other meetings
- Undertake all duties, tasks, assessments, assignments or other work required to achieve your relevant qualification, ensuring good college attendance and punctuality at all times
- Undertake Functional skills in maths and English, if required, to the appropriate level to achieve your Apprenticeship
- Act in a professional manner at all times, to maintain and enhance the reputation of SCC
- What you'll learn:
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.

- Estimate required materials and produce a cutting list.

- Produce jigs.
- Identify well-being support available to self and others.
- Site carpenter: Apply first fix techniques and practices for structural carcassing, straight timber or metal partition walls, floor joists, floor joist coverings, and straight flights of stairs.
- Site carpenter: Install structural fixings.
- Site carpenter: Size timber from sizing tables.
- Site carpenter: Apply site second fix techniques and practices for service encasement, cladding, wall and floor units and fitments, handrails and spindles to straight flights of stairs, internal and external doors, skirting boards and architraves, and window boards.
- Site carpenter: Apply site carpenter techniques and practices to construction of rafter roofs, including trussed (prefabricated) and traditional (built on site), including the construction of verge, eaves, and fitting loft access.
- Site carpenter: Use and store laser levels (e.g., cross line laser).
- Site carpenter: Form connections (e.g., using joints, nails, screws, bolts, and adhesive).
- Site carpenter: Apply measuring, marking out, cutting (square and angled), mitring, hinging, and recessing techniques.
- Site carpenter: Carry out splicing and scribing techniques.
- Architectural joiner: Produce setting out details, including setting rods, and mark out for timber products.
- Architectural joiner: Produce basic woodworking joints including dovetail, bridal, mortise and tenon, and halving.
- Architectural joiner: Form connections using dowels, biscuit, staples, and adhesives.
- Architectural joiner: Apply techniques and practices to the manufacture and assembly of a timber window with casement including glazing rebates and associated ironmongery.
- Architectural joiner: Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for first fix products: straight staircases, door frames, and linings.
- Architectural joiner: Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for second fix products: timber doors, wall and floor units, timber mouldings, staircase spindles, and balustrades.
- Architectural joiner: Fit ironmongery including door locks, door handles, door hinges, latches, and drawer runners.
- Architectural joiner: Inspect, prepare, and operate fixed machinery.
