As an Apprentice at Ian Williams, you’ll learn on the job, gaining hands-on experience while studying at college. You’ll be supported by experienced tradespeople, including your own dedicated mentor, and work towards mastering your chosen trade.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Learn on the job by gaining hands-on experience in painting and decorating.
  • Work on projects such as social housing, heritage buildings, schools, universities, and commercial buildings.
  • Prepare surfaces, including filling, sanding, and caulking.
  • Master paint application techniques, including rolling, cutting in, and brush skills.
  • Perform external works such as on railings, sheds, fences, and walls.
  • Work both inside and outside in various weather conditions.
  • Attend college one day a week to gain theoretical knowledge.
  • Build a portfolio of evidence for your End Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Contribute to the team and the company's success.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Select and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE).
  • Safely use working at height equipment.
  • Identify hazards and comply with risk assessments and method statements.
  • Read and interpret various forms of information, including drawings, specifications, and manufacturer data.
  • Ensure efficient and sustainable use of materials, including proper waste disposal.
  • Prepare work areas by removing and reinstating furnishings and fixtures.
  • Protect and prepare safe working environments.
  • Select, use, maintain, and store hand tools and power tools.
  • Prepare internal and external surfaces for finishing systems.
  • Apply surface coatings to untreated external surfaces using brushes and rollers.
  • Apply solvent-borne and water-borne coating systems to various surfaces.
  • Prepare and apply foundation paper and wall coverings.
  • Carry out minor repairs.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues and customers using construction terminology.
  • Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance.

Benefits

  • Wage: £16,224 for the first year, with potential increases based on age and National Minimum Wage rates for apprentices.
  • Training Course: Painter and decorator (level 2) with NOTTINGHAM COLLEGE.
  • Hours: 39 hours per week (Monday to Thursday, 8 hours per day; Friday, 7 hours per day).
  • Duration: 2 years.
  • Permanent Contract: Guaranteed job upon qualification.
  • Holiday: 23 days per year plus bank holidays.
  • Workwear: Personal Protective Equipment and Uniform provided.
  • Tools: Toolkit provided to get you started.
  • Progression: Options to explore Supervisory/Foreperson roles after the apprenticeship.
