Functional Skills Tutor (English & Maths)
Location: West Midlands (Remote Delivery with travel required)
Contract: Part-time / Permanent
Salary: £28,000 - £35,000 Pro Rata, depending on hours and experience
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Functional Skills Tutor (English and/or Maths) to join our growing team. This is a predominantly remote delivery role, with travel required across the West Midlands for learner invigilation, staff training, meetings, and events.
You will play a key role in supporting learners to develop essential English and Maths skills, helping them gain qualifications and progress into further education, employment, or apprenticeships.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver engaging Functional Skills sessions in English and/or Maths via remote learning platforms. Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality, learner-centred lessons. Support learners to overcome barriers and build confidence in their studies. Carry out initial assessments, track progress, and maintain accurate learner records. Prepare learners for Functional Skills examinations and coordinate exam readiness. Attend centres across the West Midlands for invigilation, staff training, meetings, and learner events. Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion at all times. Work collaboratively with colleagues to support learner engagement, retention, and achievement.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
Has experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths. Holds (or is working towards) a recognised teaching qualification (e.g. DET/PGCE/Cert Ed). Is confident delivering remote/online learning effectively. Can motivate and engage learners with diverse needs and starting points. Has strong organisational, planning, and communication skills. Understands safeguarding responsibilities within education and training.
Desirable Experience
Experience working with 16+ learners Experience supporting learners with EHCPs or additional learning needs. Experience delivering blended learning (online and face-to-face). Experience in exam preparation and invigilation.
