Role Description The Lead Engineer – Mechanical Systems is responsible for driving the design, development, and delivery of advanced mechanical systems for indoor farming and turnkey agricultural solutions. The role focuses on integrating HVAC, irrigation, fertigation, and environmental control systems to create efficient, reliable, and scalable controlled environment agriculture solutions. Acting as the technical authority, the position oversees the full project lifecycle, from concept and engineering design to installation and commissioning, while ensuring compliance with industry standards, optimising system performance, and delivering sustainable, high quality outcomes through cross functional collaboration.
Key responsibilities
Lead the end-to-end engineering design, development, and implementation of mechanical systems for indoor farming and turnkey agricultural solutions, including controlled environment agriculture, greenhouse systems, and container based farming units. Design and integrate mechanical systems covering HVAC, irrigation, fertigation, and environmental control systems to ensure optimal plant growth conditions and operational efficiency. Specify mechanical components, materials, piping layouts, and system capacities in line with engineering standards, project requirements, and operational constraints. Develop and optimise system layouts and mechanical configurations using CAD and simulation tools to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability. Lead technical research and engineering analysis to improve system performance, reduce energy consumption, and enhance sustainability of farming operations. Oversee installation, commissioning, and validation of mechanical and integrated systems, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Establish and monitor performance control systems, including environmental parameters, system efficiency, and equipment reliability, to drive continuous improvement. Coordinate with cross-functional teams including electrical, automation, and software engineers to deliver fully integrated turnkey solutions. Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout the project lifecycle, including planning, execution, and delivery, ensuring alignment with client requirements and company standards. Take full accountability for A-to-Z project delivery of mechanical and integrated systems, ensuring timelines, budgets, and performance targets are met.
Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; Master’s degree in Advanced Mechanical Engineering is preferred. Proven experience in mechanical engineering, MEP systems, or industrial maintenance within manufacturing, facilities, or engineering environments. Hands on experience in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems like HVAC. Exposure to quality assurance processes, inspections, and compliance with engineering standards like ISO. Familiarity with CAD and engineering simulation tools such as AutoCAD, Revit etc for system modelling and analysis. Experience in project coordination, including scheduling, documentation, and working with cross-functional teams to deliver engineering projects. Basic knowledge of automation systems, PLC diagnostics, and mechatronics integration is desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, technical communication, and ability to work in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments. Awareness of health, safety, and regulatory compliance standards within UK/EU engineering environments.
