Job Overview

The successful applicant will be exposed to elective and emergency plastic surgery patients. They will gain experience in how to approach clinical situations in plastic surgery starting from the initial consultation, making the diagnosis, to clerking and preparing the patients for theatre, post operative management, and short, medium and long term follow-up in outpatient clinics.

Experience will be gained in handling of tissue and managing wounds as well as performing basic plastic surgical procedures. There will be exposure to the team approach within the specialty as well as on multi-disciplinary teams. This will include attending specialist clinics, assisting in theatre, and liaising with other specialties.

Most of the commitments are at Southmead, but the post holder will be expected to assist his/her Consultant at certain Outpatient Clinics. The job will cover the ward and theatre duties. The successful candidate will also take part in the on call rota as part of the team.

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

MB BS Maintain Full registration with the GMC, with a licence to practice.

Desirable criteria

Higher Academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS) ATLS MRCS

Work Experience

Essential criteria

Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent) Completion of Foundation years 1 & 2 training (or equivalent)

Desirable criteria

Some training in A&E, Orthopaedics or Plastic Surgery Completion of one year in an approved training post in a surgical specialty or in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential Experience in audit project and written up.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

Proven teaching ability Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates. Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals. Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues. Knowledge of political context within which we operate.

Desirable criteria

Completion of a general management course or programme.

Personal Qualities/Special Circumstances

Essential criteria

Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team. Ability to work independently as well as part of the Surgical Directorate. Good verbal communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
