About our Team
Newton is the flagship physics journal from Cell Press and launched in 2025 to serve physics researchers in all areas of physics and interdisciplinary fields. As a sibling journal of our field-shaping titles including Chem, Joule, Matter and Device, Newton publishes influential research in both fundamental and applied physics, as well as thought-provoking reviews and perspectives.
About the Role
We are recruiting a scientific editor to join the Newton team. They will have the unique opportunity to help shape a prominent and vibrant journal, championing their communities. We are looking for scientists with a PhD in physics. Desirable expertise includes quantum information, communication and sensing; optics and photonics; but expertise in other areas will be considered too. Previous editorial experience is not essential.
The role will report to the Editor in Chief and will contribute to continue establishing the journal as a sought-after venue to publish the most impactful research by building strong relationships with the community.
This is a full-time role for candidates that will be based in either London or Oxford in the UK, or Amsterdam in The Netherlands.
Responsibilities
Evaluating research papers submitted to the journal and handling the peer review process up to acceptance. Commissioning and editing review article and other types of content; writing editorials and brief technical summaries. Traveling extensively to attend conferences and visit research institutions. Understanding the needs of the international research community of authors, readers, and reviewers the journal serves. Building effective working relationships with colleagues across Cell Press and contribute to the overall success of Cell Press in the physical sciences.
Requirements
Have a PhD in physics, preferably in areas such as quantum information, communication and sensing; optics and photonics. Post-doc experience is welcome but not required. Be a critical thinker and be willing to learn and engage with diverse areas within physics. Have excellent written and oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills. Have great teamworking skills and a collaborative mindset suited to work in a diverse global team. Have an interest in publishing trends and scientific communication. Have proven organizational and time management skills, and an ability to work independently.
