This rotational programme offers clinical experience in providing high-quality pharmaceutical care to patients across all Trust sites. Rotations include anticoagulation, clinical services, hepatology, paediatrics, neurosciences, medicines finance, specialist medicine, cancer & aseptic services, acute medicine, surgery, and clinical trials. This post is ideal for an individual seeking to develop clinical, leadership, and managerial skills. Rotations have structured objectives to ensure participants gain sufficient experience and skills while contributing to department and Trust priorities.

Requirements

  • Registered Pharmacist with significant competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
  • Registered Independent Prescriber or willingness to complete
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent qualification / experience
  • Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the clinical governance agenda
  • Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
  • Experience in directorate pharmacy
  • Maintains a broad level of pharmacy practice
  • Appropriate post-registration experience in hospital Pharmacy or equivalent area of practice with assessed competencies
  • Experience of supervising others
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
  • Experience of practice research or audit
  • Demonstration of advanced practice using evidence mapped to the RPS Advanced Practice Framework
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats with staff and patients
  • Ability to provide highly complex information on medicines use, clinical pharmacy, and financial issues to all levels of healthcare professionals (up to and including consultants/service managers)
  • Ability to use available evidence to make sound judgments in relation to patient- or drug-specific issues to motivate self and others
  • Basic keyboard and computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, report generation, and presentations)
  • Appropriate UK professional registration
  • This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and will require a Disclosure and Barring Service submission.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a specialist practitioner and role model, managing the day-to-day pharmaceutical care of patients in the speciality.
  • Attend daily consultant ward rounds in specific rotations.
  • Respond to clinical queries both internally and externally.
  • Produce monthly financial and activity reports, including monitoring of cost savings initiatives.
  • Conduct audit, quality improvement, and research projects.
  • Participate in activities such as risk management, clinical guideline development, and staff training.
  • Act as a deputy for Specialist Pharmacist when necessary.
  • Participate in the multidisciplinary team delivering and promoting high-quality, cost-effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
  • Provide interface and discharge liaison, and support to the wards & units within the Care Group.
  • Consistently lead on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to the many sub-specialties within the Care Group and ensure a high level of clinical pharmacy input.
  • Act as a clinical role model and supervise rotational staff at ward level.
  • Promote the safe use of drugs within the specialty.
  • Develop, implement, and audit local guidelines.
  • Audit usage of medicines in the Care Group with the aim of promoting cost-effective prescribing.
  • Assist in financial reporting to the Care Group and drug budget management.
  • Ensure seamless pharmaceutical care on discharge, liaising with other pharmacists and healthcare professionals (i.e., primary and secondary) taking over care of the patient.
  • Work with the Principal Pharmacist for the speciality to extend the boundaries of professional practice within the Care Group.
