Description and Main Purpose of Job
· Non-watch keeping Statutory Safety Officer
· Other: Bridge watch as required by Captain or Staff Captain
· Sail Operator
Key Responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Movement of passengers:
- The overall implementation and supervision of the shipboard organization for movement of passengers en masse
- The movement and evacuation of passengers in an emergency, embarkation, disembarkation, shore excursion, etc.
- The discipline and conduct of the crew and passengers re the ship's emergency procedures for the muster of passengers
- The programming of emergency drills and ensuring that all passengers and crew attend them
Statutory Safety Officer:
- Participating as Team member in the Shipboard Senior Management Safety inspection described in section "Fire hazards, fire precautions, firefighting"
- Compiling the ship-specific form SAF96 “Shipboard Senior Management Safety inspection”
- Haz Occ report preparation for approval by the Master, including:
- Incident, Accident, Near Miss, Unsafe Acts and Unsafe Conditions investigation, analysis and evaluation
- Making recommendations to prevent recurrence and monitoring that any recommendations are acted upon
- Completion of associated reports using forms SAF11/13/14/15 and Shipsure HazOcc manager and submission for review to:
- The Company’s Marine S&Q and Insurance Departments
- The ship’s SEPPH committee

Safety training:
- The implementation and conduct of safety trainings following:
- Company’s procedures and instructions
- The Muster List
- The Shipboard Emergency Organization (SEO), if available
- Conducting ship induction and training re SEO for all ship's personnel with particular reference to watertight doors, firefighting equipment and lifesaving appliances
- Appraisal and training of all on board re occupational health and safety procedures including:
- The Company’s VMS
- The Code of Safe Working Practice (COSWOP)
- The Code of Conduct - maintaining the Muster List up to date, co-ordination and organization of all aspects of the SEO (when available), including current documentation, distribution and display of relevant information
Safety maintenance:
- The implementation of the Planned Maintenance System and the effective repair and maintenance of all firefighting equipment and lifesaving appliances and other safety equipment
- Advising the Master re any defects or malfunctions of safety related equipment
Deck Department inventory control:
- The control of:
- Stock level records and stores requisitions for deck department stores
- External services supplied to the Deck Department
- Availability and filing of documentation/ certification related to equipment requiring type approval (MED directive/ UKCA scheme), asbestos-free declarations, IMO Fire Test Procedure Certificate etc.
Bridge Watchkeeping:
- Keeping bridge watches as required and identified by the Master in accordance with section Bridge Watchkeeping
- The composition of each watch is to be adequate and appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions:
- In normal operating conditions the composition of the watches will be at minimum 1 certified Deck Officer and 1 Able seaman
- The Master will set the watch composition in conditions other than normal e.g. restricted visibility, ice zone, high traffic density, manoeuvring, etc.
- The completion of rounds of the watch (as might be specified in the Masters Standing Orders), including those areas that are necessary for ensuring the safety, security and good order of the vessel, her crew and passengers

Mooring stations:
- Attending mooring stations as instructed by the Staff Captain
- Supervising crew assigned to mooring stations and ensuring that mooring operations are conducted in accordance with the advice in the Code of Safe Working Practice
Tender operations:
- Assisting in tendering operations as required by the Staff Captain
Communications:
- GMDSS communication in case of emergency
- GMDSS and radio traffic operations
- Obtaining information re weather conditions:
- Before the departure of the ship
- At least every 12 hours when the ship is at sea
- Ensuring that emergency radio batteries and any other rechargeable batteries for communications equipment (including aldis lamps) are in good condition and fully charged
Permit To Work System:
- The operation of the permit to work system
Drills and Trainings:
Participates and Organises training and drill duties as per his role (ISM)
Specific or Occasional tasks:
As asked by Captain or Staff Captain as reasonably as practicable
