Summary

As part of our Industry team, you will test and fault diagnosis on deliverable Systems and sub-assemblies to component level; Survey, repair and upgrade customer equipment. Provide technical support to Project/Engineering Teams and contribute to the development and evaluation of innovative approaches/solutions to ongoing issues or problems.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Test and diagnose complex faults on deliverable customer systems and sub-assemblies
  • Co-ordinate all activities with regards to the testing of the Systems to ensure delivery dates are met to agreed quality and costs
  • Responsible for the presentation of Systems for customer acceptance
  • Directly represent Thales with respect to the provision and support of Customer Systems, both on and off-site, including Setting to Work and all Trials and Customer Acceptance tasks
  • Provide Test Methods and solutions and generate procedures to enable System and LRU test and support
  • Supply technical information to Operation Management and Project Teams to enable appropriate decisions to be made
  • Inform Test Management and Engineering of any requirements for Test Equipment and define those requirements

What you'll learn

  • Translate conceptual ideas or technical requirements into developmental outcomes, operational designs, or specifications for electrical and electronic projects or programmes of work.
  • Select, use and apply approved problem-solving methods to solve problems and determine solutions or actions.
  • Collate, store, use and present data and supporting documentation.
  • Interpret and produce technical documentation such as schematic and circuit diagrams, engineering drawings or 3D CAD models, simulation models, engineering reports, test reports, fault reports or data analytics.
  • Observe, record and draw accurate and auditable conclusions from data evidence.
  • Manage assigned projects or programmes of work, taking into account factors such as planning, safety, quality, cost, performance and sustainability.
  • Apply processes for project or programme management such as escalation, audit or risk management and risk mitigation.
  • Comply with statutory and organisational safety and security standards and requirements, supporting safety risk assessments and mitigate any risks identified within the design, manufacture, development or test activity.
  • Identify and use processes, resources and technologies to complete electrical and electronic engineering projects or programmes of work.
  • Apply quality management and assurance processes to identify and rectify faults, inaccuracies, discrepancies or unexpected results during the electrical and electronic engineering process.
  • Carry out pre operations checks of electrical and electronic engineering systems and equipment before use.
  • Manage continuous improvement activities using techniques such as Six Sigma, 5s, Kaizen, Lean, Kanban, Statistical Process Control or Value Stream Mapping.
  • Create, maintain and review project documentation.
  • Record and action any non-conformities.
  • Communicate with others verbally, for example colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Communicate in writing, for example technical reports, documents and presentations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Manage differing and competing interests with stakeholders.
  • Identify and complete opportunities for personal and professional development including keeping up to date with current and emerging technology.
  • Apply and promote policies and practices to support equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Consider management of change (MOC) requirements when undertaking electrical and electronic projects or programmes of work.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and standards associated with the electrical and electronic engineering environment.

Programme structure: Throughout the four-year programme, you will combine university study with practical workplace experience, developing both academic knowledge and professional engineering skills.

Lectures and workshops are delivered through a series of 2-week blocks spaced throughout your degree apprenticeship

Alongside campus taught lecturers, you will have access to digital resources and discipline experts to support your studies

You will study towards a Level 6 Electrical and Electronic Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with Exeter University. In your first year you will be given a broad theoretical and practical knowledge across all core engineering disciplines, before progressing onto increasingly advanced topics later in the course.

Years one and two provide core fundamental knowledge of engineering principles, as well as applying mathematics to engineering problems.

Years three and four are spent applying your knowledge to engineering problems.

You will complete a Technical Report and Presentation in the final year: an opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to devise an engineering solution at a professional level in an area of engineering study that aligns to your role at Thales.

By the end of the programme you will have achieved a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as a Level 6 Electrical and Electronic Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in: 5 GCSE's Including Maths and English (grade Grade 9-4 (A-C))

A Level in: 3 A Levels including Maths and a Science subject (grade ABB with a B in Maths)
