Job Description
At Mott MacDonald, we believe engineering is more than just infrastructure—it’s about shaping a future that’s resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. As climate change challenges our environment and communities, civil engineers are at the heart of creating solutions that protect natural resources, improve lives, and foster economic and social growth for generations to come.
We are looking for passionate Graduate Civil & Structural Engineers to make a meaningful impact across our Energy sectors, with opportunities in:
- Transmission & Distribution
- Nuclear and Defence
- Hydropower
You’ll work alongside experienced professionals on projects that matter—helping to create better cities, reduce poverty, and improve public health. You’ll be immersed in a collaborative environment where your ideas are valued, and your growth is supported.
Transmission & Distribution
You will play a key role in designing and delivering the infrastructure that powers the UK’s transition to Net Zero. With the growing demand for renewable energy, your work will help ensure clean energy reaches homes, businesses, and even international markets through interconnectors to Europe. You’ll be directly involved in the design of critical infrastructure that supports the transmission of low-carbon energy across the UK.
Nuclear and Defence
Play a vital role in delivering safe, sustainable, carbon-free power. Our teams work across nuclear new build, existing generation, decommissioning, waste management and defence-related programmes, helping clients solve highly regulated technical challenges throughout the project lifecycle. Working in this area offers the opportunity to contribute to safe, sustainable, carbon-free power and critical national infrastructure, while being part of a trusted team committed to safety, innovation and long-term impact.
Hydropower
Focusing on the development and delivery of renewable power projects that generate electricity from water, including conventional hydropower and pumped storage schemes. Projects typically involve dams, reservoirs, tunnels, waterways, powerhouses and associated civil, structural and electro-mechanical infrastructure. Working in hydropower offers the opportunity to contribute to low-carbon energy, energy security and resilient infrastructure on complex projects in the UK and internationally.
Within each sector your role may include:
- Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Detailed Design phases
- Civil works design, including platforms (earthworks, embankments, retaining walls), access roads (temporary and permanent), and drainage systems (SuDS, Infodrainage)
- Structural design, covering foundations, beams, columns, and connections
- Feasibility studies and optioneering exercises to identify optimal solutions
- Site visits to assess conditions and support construction phases

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

For this reason, we cannot accept applications from candidates who would be working under the Graduate visa route or other time-limited visas, (irrespective of visa duration), due to their temporary nature and the requirement for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route in future.
