Job Description
The energy sector is changing rapidly as the UK and global markets work to deliver cleaner power, strengthen energy security and create resilient systems for the future. At Mott MacDonald, our multidisciplinary teams help clients turn these ambitions into practical, deliverable solutions. By combining technical expertise, digital innovation and a whole-system perspective, we support informed decisions and create long-term value for clients, communities and the environment.
As a graduate electrical engineer, you will join collaborative project teams working on some of the energy industry’s most important challenges. You will build your technical knowledge through real project experience, learn from experienced engineers and contribute ideas from the outset.
Applications for this role will be reviewed throughout October and November and successful applicants will then be invited to an interview/assessment centre in December.
Your opportunity:
Our graduate opportunities span a range of energy sectors. During the application process, you will select your preferred sector and location.
Transmission and Distribution
Help plan, design and deliver the electricity networks needed to connect new generation, move power efficiently and maintain a secure, reliable supply. You could support onshore and offshore transmission, distribution networks, grid connections, interconnectors and infrastructure operating from 11kV to above 400kV. Your work may involve primary plant, protection and control, terrestrial and subsea cables, or power systems studies.
Nuclear
Contribute across the nuclear lifecycle, from new-build and emerging reactor technologies to the safe management, decommissioning and remediation of legacy assets. You may support electrical system design, equipment specification, safety and regulatory requirements, resilience assessments, constructability or digital engineering in a highly controlled environment where quality and integrity are essential.
Thermal Transition
Support the move toward reliable, lower-carbon thermal energy systems by improving asset performance, integrating new technologies and developing practical decarbonisation pathways. Projects may include gas-fired generation, energy-from-waste, district heating, fuel switching, hydrogen, carbon capture utilisation and storage, and the repurposing of existing infrastructure.
Whichever sector you join, you will work alongside experienced engineers and specialists to provide high-value technical support across the project lifecycle. Your responsibilities may include:
- Supporting optioneering, feasibility studies and cost-benefit analysis to identify practical, sustainable solutions to client challenges
- Contributing to concept and front-end engineering design, including technical assessments, equipment selection and cost estimates
- Developing detailed electrical designs, calculations, specifications, drawings and coordinated digital or BIM models
- Using data, modelling and engineering software to test performance, manage interfaces and support evidence-based decisions
- Supporting procurement, construction, commissioning and operation to help ensure assets are delivered safely and perform as intended
- Working with colleagues and stakeholders including utilities, network operators, developers, contractors, manufacturers, investors and regulatory bodies
- Preparing clear technical reports and presenting findings to project teams and clients

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

For this reason, we cannot accept applications from candidates who would be working under the Graduate visa route or other time-limited visas, (irrespective of visa duration), due to their temporary nature and the requirement for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route in future.
We continue to welcome applications from candidates who are eligible for alternative immigration routes in the UK, that do not require sponsorship as a Skilled Worker now or in future.
