Job Description: Anglican Chaplain at HMP Onley
Overview
This is a full-time position for an Anglican Chaplain at HMP Onley, open to both Lay Persons and Ordained Priests or Deacons.
Job Holder Overview
Job holders will provide faith/belief and pastoral care to prisoners and staff of their own faith/belief tradition and have an understanding/knowledge of other faith/beliefs as part of a multifaith/belief chaplaincy team. They will also meet the pastoral needs of people of other faiths/beliefs and none. The role involves working with colleagues to ensure the delivery of Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners policy and contributing to the broader work of chaplaincy.
Responsibilities
- Provide guidance on their faith/belief system, offering advice, pastoral care, and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff, and their families.
- Plan and lead worship/meditation, prayer, and faith/belief specific meetings.
- Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship/meditation, study, and religious programs.
- Contribute towards the development of local policy, procedures, and practice.
- Provide pastoral care to prisoners, support in crisis situations, and mentoring for other chaplains and volunteers.
- Nurture Chaplaincy volunteers and promote the Official Prison Visitor (OPV) scheme.
- Ensure the prison community is aware of relevant faith/belief events and coordinate support for these.
- Contribute to training programs and materials for staff and volunteers.
- Represent the chaplaincy team at establishment meetings in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
- Actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
- Attend relevant boards/meetings and actively contribute either as chair or team member.
- Take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer, Family Services single point of contact, volunteer coordinator, etc., with the agreement of the Managing Chaplain and establishment senior management team.
- Forge links with local faith/belief communities and other agencies to support prisoners on release.
- Participate in developing ways for improving and achieving targets, ensuring relevant administration, data collection, and analysis are completed.
Essential Experience
- Meet the faith/belief eligibility requirements for their chosen faith/belief.
- Ability to fulfill all spoken and written aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English or (where specified in Wales) Welsh.
Technical Requirements
- Complete specific training to hold the qualifications required for the area of specialism outlined on the relevant job description.

Faith/Belief Eligibility Requirements
- Ordained Bishop, Priest, or Deacon
- Be an ordained member of the Anglican Communion (or of churches part of the Porvoo Agreement).
- Will normally need to have been in Holy Orders for a minimum of three years.
- Have formal endorsement in the form of the licence of the Diocesan Bishop.
- Reader, Religious Brother/Sister, Church Army Evangelist
- Be a Reader (as set out in Canon E4 of The Canons of the Church of England or direct equivalent in other Anglican provinces).
- Be a Religious sister or brother, Church Army Evangelist, or other appropriately qualified or licensed minister in the Anglican tradition, subject to agreement from the Anglican Bishop to HM Prisons.
- Have formal endorsement in the form of the licence of the Diocesan Bishop (Evidence required before appointment).
All must have:
- Signed the Church of England documentation on mutual flourishing or Church in Wales equivalent.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Anglican theology and religious practice.
- Formal endorsement from the HMPPS Anglican Faith and Belief Adviser confirming eligibility and suitability.
- Diocesan DBS clearance and up-to-date safeguarding training.
Hours of Work
- Full-time: 37-hour working week.
- Unsocial Hours Working: The role requires working regular unsocial hours, and a payment at the current approved organization rate will be made in addition to the basic pay to recognize this. Unsocial hours are those hours outside 0700 - 1900 hrs Monday to Friday and include working evenings, nights, weekends, and Bank/Public Holidays.
Working Arrangements
- The Ministry of Justice offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
