An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and motivated pharmacists to join the Pharmacy Team at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary.
We Are Currently Recruiting To Two Foundation Pharmacist Posts
- 1 x Permanent Post – 21.6 hours per week (consideration will be given to working 21 hpw)
- 1 x Fixed Term Post, until 04/01/27 – 15 hours per week

As a Foundation Pharmacist, you will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality patient-centred pharmaceutical care across a range of clinical specialties. The successful candidates will contribute to ward-based clinical pharmacy services, medicines optimisation, dispensary services and multidisciplinary working to support safe and effective use of medicines.
This is an excellent opportunity for newly qualified pharmacists, pharmacists completing Foundation Training, or pharmacists seeking to develop their clinical skills within a progressive pharmacy service committed to education, training and service improvement.
The Role
You will provide clinical pharmacy services to designated wards and clinical areas, becoming an integral member of the multidisciplinary team and supporting safe, effective and evidence-based use of medicines.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Medicines reconciliation and medication history taking.
- Participation in consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team working.
- Clinical review and verification of prescriptions.
- Supporting safe and effective discharge planning.
- Counselling patients on the use of their medicines.
- Providing medicines information to patients and healthcare professionals.
- Supporting dispensary and medicines management services.
- Participating in audit, quality improvement and service development activities.
- Contributing to the education and training of pharmacy staff and students.
The role will also provide opportunities to gain experience across specialist clinical services and aseptic services as part of ongoing professional development.
Professional Development
We are committed to supporting pharmacist development and recognise prescribing as a core component of modern pharmacy practice.
Pharmacists appointed to the permanent post who do not already hold an Independent Prescribing qualification will be supported to undertake prescribing training through the national Foundation Pharmacist development pathway, subject to programme eligibility requirements.
Structured support will be provided to develop clinical, professional and leadership skills, enabling pharmacists to progress confidently within hospital pharmacy practice.
About You
You will:
- Be registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Demonstrate a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Be organised, adaptable and motivated to develop professionally.
- Hold an independent prescribing qualification or be willing to work towards this.
Experience of hospital pharmacy practice through undergraduate placements, foundation training, summer employment or previous posts would be advantageous. An Independent Prescribing qualification is desirable but not essential.

Working Pattern
The Pharmacy Service operates a 7-day service and flexibility is required to support service delivery.
The successful candidate appointed to the permanent 21.6 hours post will be expected to participate in:
- Weekend working arrangements.
- The pharmacy on-call service, following completion of appropriate training and competency assessment.
The successful candidate appointed to the temporary 15-hour post will participate in weekend service requirements as agreed.
