Job Opportunity: Fitness and Aerobic Instructor
The City of Dover is seeking an individual to perform professional work in the area of fitness and aerobic instruction. This instruction is done in classes in the water using accepted fitness, and aerobic techniques.
Position Summary
Individual must be able to safely teach and demonstrate all skills being required of the students. Active, enthusiastic leadership of the class is essential. Must be organized in setting up classes and be able to work with a wide variety of skill levels. Must be very physically fit and be able to do sustained workouts in repeated fashion on a daily basis.
This is a seasonal part-time position, up to 20 hours per week. $20.29 per hour. Position is open until filled.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach safe aerobic and fitness techniques to classes and individuals from youth to adult and in varying levels of skill from beginner to advanced.
- Set safe limits of activity for participants based on the individual’s ability to perform.
- Organize and demonstrate complete workouts for a variety of levels of students.
- Work well with the public to motivate them to improve their personal fitness and skills.
- Attend to many items and individuals simultaneously and/or in sequence.
- Maintain and enforce safety rules for the class and facility.
- Develop and distribute publicity information including brochures, flyers, news releases, and posters.
- Respond to public inquiries about aerobic and fitness programs.
- Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as class and equipment set up, maintenance and storage, organization of the class space and storage area, selecting appropriate equipment and making recommendations for purchase and the purchase of necessary items with prior approvals.
- Supervision of classes and activities held during sessions.
- Assessing individuals and making recommendations as to their progress and direction.
- Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of first aid and safety principles.
- Knowledge of exercise technique and appropriate aerobic, fitness.
- Significant experience and knowledge in aerobic, and fitness field.
- Ability to communicate effectively to students and to be able to motivate them to perform skills properly.
- Knowledge of health risks related to exercise and the ability to respond in case of emergency to health issues in the participants.
- Ability to lead and instruct others.
- Ability to write reports and communicate well verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain quality working relationships with co-workers and participants.
- Very good physical condition and stamina.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma and a minimum of two years experience in the instruction of aerobic/fitness programs, training from recognized schools/programs or persons within the field of aerobics/fitness.
- College degree in the physical fitness/health sports/medicine/therapy and certifications preferred and experience in related fields or any combination of education and experience that meets these requirements.
