Role Description

The 2nd Chef is a full-time, on-site role based at St Peter’s College in Oxford. The role involves supporting the Head Chef in planning, preparing, and cooking meals for students, staff, and guests, including daily services and special events. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with menu development
  • Ensuring high standards of food quality and presentation
  • Maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment
  • Helping manage stock levels

  • Adhering to food safety and hygiene regulations
  • Working collaboratively with the catering team
  • Contributing to efficient service
  • Occasionally supervising kitchen staff in the absence of senior chefs

Qualifications

  • Professional cookery skills with experience in preparing high-quality meals in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety, hygiene standards, and health and safety regulations in catering.
  • Ability to assist with menu planning, including accommodating dietary requirements and allergens.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills to support smooth kitchen operations.
  • Experience in stock control, ordering, and efficient use of ingredients to minimize waste.
  • Relevant culinary qualifications or certifications (e.g., NVQ in Professional Cookery or equivalent) are desirable.
  • Previous experience in institutional or hospitality catering, such as colleges, universities, hotels, or restaurants, is beneficial.
