Company Description

Skybound Studios is a development studio specialising in high-fidelity, hand-crafted airport environments for flight simulation. The team currently focuses on X-Plane 12, creating detailed, immersive environments that elevate the realism of virtual aviation. With plans to expand to Microsoft Flight Simulator, the studio is positioned for growth in the broader simulation market. Skybound Studios values precision, visual quality, and authenticity, offering artists the opportunity to contribute to highly polished, simulation-ready environments.

Role Description

The 3D Environment Artist will be responsible for designing and building detailed airport environments, including buildings, ground markings, detailing, and props, optimised for real-time flight simulation. Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Applying realistic textures and materials
  • Setting up lighting

The role also involves:

  • Iterating on level layouts
  • Troubleshooting visual issues
  • Maintaining consistent quality and style across projects

This is a freelance, revenue-share remote role, working closely with the team to deliver high-fidelity environments on schedule.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess skills in Level Design and Game Development to create engaging, functional airport environments.
  • Candidates should possess skills in Blender, Maya, 3dsmax, Sketchup or other 3D modeling tools to build and optimise assets.
  • Candidates should possess skills in Texturing, including UV mapping and material setup, to achieve realistic surfaces and details.
  • Candidates should possess skills in Lighting to enhance visual quality, mood, and readability within flight simulation environments.
  • Experience with flight simulation platforms (e.g., X-Plane 12, Microsoft Flight Simulator) or similar real-time engines is beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of environment art workflows, asset optimisation, and performance considerations for games or simulations.
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team, receive and implement feedback, and manage deadlines effectively.
  • A portfolio demonstrating high-quality environment work in 3D or scenery development is required; relevant education or equivalent professional experience is preferred but not required.
