Harbour24 is an interactive digital design studio:
We're building a bespoke interactive 3D product configurator for a confirmed client, industrial and defence sector. It needs to run natively in a browser, fast, on exhibition touchscreens, iPads, and desktop, with zero patience for load times or a "hang on while this fires up" moment. No cloud streaming, no dependency on a live connection once it's loaded. We need a developer who can actually build that.
What you'd be doing:
- You'd own the real-time, front-end side of the build: taking 3D assets (a 3D generalist/technical artist is handling CAD conversion, texturing and lighting separately) and building the actual interactive experience around them, rotation, zoom, hotspots, configuration logic, smooth transitions, and making sure it performs properly across a genuinely wide range of devices and screen sizes, from a phone to an 80 inch exhibition display.
Our default approach is a browser-native build in Three.js and React, fully client-owned with no licensing dependency. We're open to a Unity-based approach targeting WebGL export instead, if that's your strongest ground and you can make the case for it holding up on lower-powered exhibition hardware and mobile Safari. What matters more than the specific engine is that you've actually shipped a real-time 3D experience that real people used, not a portfolio piece.

What we're looking for:
- Proven experience building interactive, real-time 3D experiences for the browser, ideally Three.js and React, or Unity with a WebGL export target
- Strong grasp of performance optimisation for 3D on the web, this has to run smoothly on a wide range of hardware, not just a high-end dev machine
- Experience shipping a responsive, cross-device application, not a single fixed-resolution build
- Comfortable owning a build end to end: structure, performance, deployment, not just implementing a design file
- Freelance or contract, remote, UK time zone overlap preferred

Nice to have:
- Experience building product configurators, virtual showrooms, or similar interactive sales tools specifically
- Experience with touch-first interaction design for large-format displays or kiosks
- Past work in defence, industrial, or another sector with genuinely complex engineered products
- Comfortable working alongside a separate analytics/engagement-tracking layer being added later, so the build is set up cleanly for that rather than needing rework
- AR/VR or WebXR experience, not required for this build but a useful signal of range if the project extends that way later
This is a paid contract engagement, scoped project by project, with real potential to grow into a rolling contract as the client's product range expands.
