About the Role
The Faculty of Engineering & Science is one of four faculties at the University of Greenwich, split across two campuses – the Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime, Kent, and the Greenwich Campus in Greenwich, London. Dedicated to inspirational learning, combining teaching with work placements and impactful research and is a complete hub for all STEM subjects within the University.
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Senior Technician – HazMat and H&S to take end-to-end ownership of the Faculty’s hazardous materials and waste facilities. This is a SG7 technical lead role in which the post holder line manages the HazMat team, including the Technician – HazMat and H&S and the Technician – Scientific Goods In, and acts as a specialist source of compliance advice and training across the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
The role spans the day-to-day management of the chemical and waste stores and specialist hazardous material facilities, ensuring the correct and compliant management and disposal of clinical, radioactive and chemical waste, and working towards ISO14001 and ISO45001 compliance. The post holder will develop and deliver specialist training and documentation – including risk assessments, SOPs and user guides – to ensure COSHH and DSEAR compliance, oversee HazMat and chemical procurement technical approvals in LabCup, manage the procurement, storage and inspection of compressed gases across the Faculty, and ensure specialist emergency equipment and PPE is maintained, calibrated and available at all times. The role also carries H&S Local Officer (HaSLO) responsibilities and contributes to local emergency response arrangements, working closely with the Technical Manager – Facilities, H&S and Stores, Health and Safety Services, EFD and Sodexo.

Key Responsibilities
- Take end-to-end ownership of the Faculty’s hazardous materials and waste facilities.

Required Qualifications and Experience
- Technical, H&S, and laboratory/HazMat facility management experience.
- Substantial experience of delivering H&S training.
- Line management or supervisory experience.
- Detailed knowledge of COSHH and DSEAR regulations and their practical application in laboratory environments.
- Detailed understanding of ISO14001 and ISO45001.
- Experience of chemical spill management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in an appropriate science subject.
- Health and safety qualification of at least IOSH ‘Managing Safely’ level.
