Deck Rating (AB) – Offshore Operations
12-Month Fixed Term Contract Location: Renfrewshire Shift Pattern: 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off
Serco is seeking a Deck Rating (AB) to undertake offshore operations, supporting the safe and effective functioning of vessels.
About the Role
The Deck Rating (AB) is the primary labour force aboard appointed vessels. Resonsible for assisting in the vessel’s safe operation, cargo handling, and general upkeep, the role demands practical skills, vigilance, and compliance with strict maritime safety standards.
Main Accountabilities

Berthing & Slipping Vessel: Assist in safely docking and undocking ships.

Ship Husbandry: Perform daily maintenance and upkeep tasks onboard.

Ship Operational Tasks: Contribute to routine ship operations as directed.

Cleaning & Meticulous Maintenance: Ensure cleanliness and order throughout the vessel’s deck spaces.

Deck Machinery & Handling: Operate cranes, winches, and other deck machinery safely.

Repair & Routine Maintenance: Support in shipboard equipment care, lubrication, and maintenance.

Safety & Compliance: Maintain full awareness of all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and contingency plans. Follow company Safety Management System (SMS), including:
- Permit to Work / Tag Out Systems
- Shipboard Management Team protocols
- Shipboard Safety Committee procedures

Watch Duties: Conduct navigational lookout and gangway watch shifts.

First Aid & Crisis Preparedness: Apply proven elementary first aid techniques during emergencies.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must:

Hold an MCA Certificate of Competency as an Able Seafarer.
-
Achieve and maintain refresher courses for:
- STCW: Personal Survival Techniques (every 5 years)
- STCW: Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (every 5 years)
- STCW: Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting (every 5 years)
- STCW: Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (every 5 years)
- STCW: Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (every 5 years)

Possess an unrestricted ENG1 Seafarer’s Medical Certificate.

Be a UK British National with a valid British passport.

Successfully obtain a Security Clearance (SC clearance).
