We are now looking for an Academic Lead with deep expertise in Physics and/or Engineering to take ownership of students in this stream, strengthen our subject curriculum and tutor team, and provide high-level academic and admissions guidance for students targeting the most competitive Physics, Engineering and related degree programmes.
Role Overview
The Academic Lead - Physics & Engineering combines outstanding subject teaching with academic leadership, university admissions expertise and student portfolio ownership. You will work with ambitious students across Physics, Engineering and related physical-science pathways, helping them build strong subject mastery, intellectual depth and competitive university applications.
You will manage a portfolio of students, lead and support Physics/Engineering tutors, shape subject-specific curriculum and enrichment, and act as a trusted academic adviser to students and families. The role is particularly suited to a high-calibre Physics, Engineering or Natural Sciences graduate who enjoys teaching but also wants broader responsibility for programme quality, people leadership and student outcomes.

What We Offer
Physics & Engineering Teaching and Academic Guidance
- Deliver rigorous, analytical and student-centred teaching in Physics and, where appropriate, Engineering-related quantitative topics.
- Support students from GCSE/IGCSE and A Level/IB through to advanced pre-university work, depending on individual student needs and the candidate’s expertise.
- Help high-achieving students develop the mathematical fluency, physical intuition, modelling skills and problem-solving depth expected by highly selective universities.
- Provide targeted preparation for competitive Physics and Engineering admissions, including relevant admissions assessments (for example ESAT where applicable), technical interviews, problem-solving discussions and subject exploration.
- Guide students in developing super-curricular depth through advanced reading, projects, competitions, research-style exploration and wider engagement with Physics and Engineering.
- Diagnose student strengths and gaps and create structured, measurable learning plans that drive academic progress.
- Take academic ownership of a portfolio of students within the Physics/Engineering stream, ensuring each student has clear academic objectives and an appropriate progression plan.
- Advise on subject choices, academic priorities and longer-term pathways for students considering Physics, Engineering, Natural Sciences and related quantitative degrees.
- Track student performance, engagement, tutor feedback and admissions milestones, intervening early where additional support is required.
- Prepare clear progress updates and academic recommendations for students, parents and internal colleagues.
- Coordinate with tutors and student-facing teams so that teaching, admissions preparation and wider academic development are joined up.
- Contribute to student retention and satisfaction through responsive communication, strong academic judgement and consistently high standards.
- Provide informed guidance on highly selective Physics and Engineering pathways, particularly Oxbridge, Imperial and other leading UK and global universities.
- Help students understand the academic profile expected for competitive courses, including subject preparation, admissions assessments, interviews and super-curricular development.
- Advise students and families clearly on realistic positioning, priorities, strengths, gaps and next steps.
- Communicate complex academic issues in a way that is precise, practical and accessible to both students and parents.
- Escalate complex academic or family concerns to senior academic leadership where appropriate.

Tutor Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Lead and mentor tutors supporting Physics and Engineering students, helping maintain Blue Education’s standards for teaching quality, responsiveness and academic professionalism.
- Contribute to tutor selection, onboarding, lesson observation, feedback and development within the stream.
- Ensure tutors are appropriately matched to students based on level, curriculum, admissions goal and subject specialism.
- Share advanced problem-solving approaches, teaching methods, admissions insights and subject knowledge with the wider academic team.
- Identify quality or performance issues early and work with senior academic leadership to resolve them.
Curriculum, Resources & Programme Development
- Design and refine Physics and Engineering curricula, enrichment pathways, assessments and teaching resources.
- Build coherent preparation pathways for different student stages - from core school curriculum through to Olympiad-style problem solving and selective university admissions.
- Develop high-quality resources for admissions assessments, technical interviews, subject enrichment and advanced problem solving.
- Use student outcomes, tutor feedback and admissions developments to continuously improve programme design and teaching quality.
- Contribute ideas for new Physics/Engineering programmes, workshops, intensive courses and academic products.
- Participate in webinars, workshops, academic events and parent-facing sessions on Physics, Engineering and competitive university admissions.
- Stay current with university course structures, admissions criteria, assessment changes and developments across Physics and Engineering education.
- Act as a credible external ambassador for Blue Education’s academic standards and Physics/Engineering expertise.
- Contribute to programme growth by identifying student needs, market opportunities and ways to strengthen the subject offering.
Academic Background - Essential
- A strong undergraduate, Master’s or PhD degree in Physics, Engineering, Natural Sciences (physical sciences), or a closely related quantitative discipline from Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Ivy League or an equivalent top global university.
- Excellent command of core Physics and strong mathematical problem-solving ability.
- Academic credibility and intellectual range to work confidently with highly ambitious students and families.
- Ability to engage with Engineering applications of Physics and guide students exploring different Engineering disciplines.
- Minimum 500+ hours of teaching, tutoring or academic mentoring experience, ideally with high-achieving secondary-school or pre-university students.
- A strong track record of explaining difficult quantitative concepts clearly and developing students’ independent problem-solving ability.
- Experience supporting applicants to highly selective universities, ideally for Physics, Engineering, Natural Sciences or related STEM courses.
- Experience with selective university admissions assessments and technical interviews is highly desirable.
- Experience with Physics Olympiad, advanced problem-solving competitions, research projects or other academic enrichment is advantageous.
- Strong judgement and the ability to take ownership of student progress rather than operating only as a classroom teacher or tutor.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including confidence advising students and parents.
- Highly organised, responsive and able to manage multiple students, tutors, deadlines, lessons and consultations.
- Ability to coach and challenge tutors constructively and uphold consistent academic standards.
- Strong digital literacy and confidence using online learning platforms, shared documents and student management systems.
- Willingness to teach and support students during evenings and weekends in peak application cycles.
- Intellectually curious and genuinely enthusiastic about Physics, Engineering and problem solving.
- A strong educator who also wants broader ownership of students, curriculum and team quality.
- Professional, commercially aware and confident working with ambitious families.
