Accounts Assistant

Location: Leeds, England
Workplace: Hybrid — three days onsite and two days from home after a six-week induction
Salary: £12.82–£14.62 per hour (£25,000–£28,500 annualised at 37.5 hours), depending on AAT level held
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am–5.30pm
Reports to: Semi-Senior Accountant (client side)

The opportunity

Apply4U is recruiting an Accounts Assistant on behalf of an established accountancy practice in central Leeds. This permanent entry-level role offers hybrid working, funded AAT study support and a documented progression route from Assistant to Senior Accountant. The client is named at first-stage screening.

The role

You will support a portfolio of small-business clients, including limited companies and sole traders, within a practice of fifteen client-facing accountants across two UK offices.

Key responsibilities

  • Process bookkeeping records, including bank reconciliations, purchase ledger and sales ledger.
  • Prepare VAT returns for review by qualified colleagues.
  • Support year-end accounts preparation under supervision.
  • Maintain client records within the practice-management system; training is provided on the specific platform.
  • Contact clients to chase documents and respond to basic queries, mainly by email with occasional phone calls.

What we are looking for

  • AAT Level 2 completed, substantially in progress, or willingness to begin the qualification from day one; the client funds it.
  • GCSE-level Maths and English, or equivalent.
  • Working Excel knowledge, including SUMIF, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP and basic formulas.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliable deadline management.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Candidates without AAT exposure may also be considered where they demonstrate strong numerical aptitude through A-level Maths, a finance-related degree or bookkeeping experience.

What the role offers

  • AAT study support including funded course fees and exam costs, plus paid study leave of one day per study week before exams.
  • Documented salary uplift on completion of AAT Level 3 and Level 4.
  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, plus three additional days at Christmas.
  • Defined progression from Accounts Assistant to Semi-Senior to Senior Accountant, with internal pay bands and timing.
  • Cycle-to-work scheme.
