Account Director (Public Sector) at Makers

Makers’ mission is to build a better future. We transform lives and organisations through pioneering training which keeps pace with global tech shifts.

Tech and AI are reshaping jobs, the economy and society. Ensuring this transition is effective, equitable and inclusive will be a driver of human wellbeing into the next century. We believe talent is everywhere and the future belongs to those who can adapt and learn.

We are here to help people do this - across tech and in every job being remade now by AI. As a committed B-Corp with the best training results in the country, we believe we uniquely bring the heart and the hard-won expertise to do this.

Role Overview

As Account Director (Public Sector) at Makers, you will be arriving to a well established set of strategic relationships that you will have the opportunity to nurture and develop. We have worked with the UK government since 2018, and serve 15 departments as well as holding strong central relationships.

As a BCorp focused on creating a better future, we believe our work with the public sector is one of our strongest and most high impact routes to achieving this.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take over a set of very important strategic relationships across departments and central governments. These are relationships we will entrust to someone who is both highly collegiate and highly strategic.
  • Work with these partners to help develop the evolving vision of tech talent in government and beyond.
  • Bring the power of Makers to execute against this strategy with a high level of operational excellence, providing oversight as the key client contact.

This is a senior individual contributor role, but you won't operate alone. Public sector growth at Makers is a strategic priority and you'll work closely with our CEO and CCO on our most important relationships and opportunities.

You'll own the momentum: building relationships, understanding complex stakeholder environments and knowing when and how to bring senior leadership into an opportunity to create maximum impact.

You will be able to think strategically and creatively about AI and tech talent, helping work with partners to build a compelling vision of this evolving space.

You will be able to execute meticulously in a complex environment, ensuring first class delivery.

We're looking for someone commercially ambitious, intellectually curious and strategically sharp. Previous public sector experience would be useful, but it isn't essential.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

More important is your ability to understand complex organisations, build credibility with senior stakeholders and find a route to growth where one isn't immediately obvious.

What You'll Do

  • Drive growth with existing relationships. Take over already warm relationships and develop trust and understanding with the client.
  • Build new relationships. Identify priority departments, stakeholders and routes into organisations, creating opportunities through thoughtful, targeted business development.
  • Shape the vision. Develop a vision and strategy for tech and AI talent in government in partnership with colleagues.
  • Navigate complexity. Understand stakeholder dynamics, funding and procurement routes to shape the right commercial approach. Own public sector bids and tenders from qualification to submission, coordinating the right team to deliver compelling, high-quality responses.
  • Own your number. Maintain a high-quality pipeline, forecast accurately and take accountability for delivering against an ambitious revenue target.

Skills and Experience

  • A strong track record of winning and growing complex, high-value B2B relationships.
  • Commercial instinct. You spot opportunities to build successful and high impact programmes, understand what will move them forward and create momentum rather than waiting for it.
  • Strategic intelligence. You're comfortable getting underneath complex organisations, connecting disparate information and working out where and how Makers can win.
  • Intellectual curiosity. You ask the right questions, learn quickly and genuinely want to understand clients' organisations and challenges.
  • Executive judgement. You're credible with senior stakeholders and know how to use senior colleagues effectively rather than simply escalating to them.
  • Ownership and drive. You're highly autonomous, organised and persistent, while knowing that the best outcomes are often created collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to make complex ideas simple and compelling.
  • Public sector experience is welcome but not essential. Experience selling complex solutions into large organisations is more important.

Benefits and Perks

  • We have a minimum holiday policy, rather than a maximum. We encourage our team to take at least 25 days a year (excluding UK Bank Holidays), including a Winter and Spring break when we shut down between late December and January, and mid year for a week. The whole company takes a break, so you’ll have peace of mind in knowing that nobody is working, not just you.
  • We embrace holistic health at Makers, where mental health matters and is just as important as physical health, which is why we offer unlimited fully paid wellness leave from day 1.
  • Private Medical Insurance (after passing probation).
  • £500 Learning & Development allowance per annum and paid time off dedicated to your training & learning.
  • Join daily meditation sessions run for the staff and students.
  • Company pension contributions.
  • Enhanced parental pay & leave - up to 20 weeks fully paid maternity leave, up to 8 weeks fully paid paternity & secondary caregiver leave, and up to 20 weeks fully paid adoption leave.
  • Access to a Perks at Work account which provides access to a range of shopping and other leisure discounts.
