Job Title: Market Development Manager – Construction
Location: UK & Ireland
Work Arrangement: Remote
About the Role
The Market Development Manager – Construction UK & Ireland will take commercial ownership of Caldic's Construction market development and overall market result across the UK & Ireland.
The initial priority will be to ensure the successful transition and retention of a significant Construction portfolio from a major global strategic principal into Caldic, working closely alongside the Customer Development Managers to secure existing customer relationships and identify immediate growth opportunities.
Once the transferred business is secured, the role will shift strongly towards business development and market expansion.
The Market Development Manager will develop the combined proposition of the strategic principal and Ingrentia, creating a differentiated Construction platform covering cellulose ethers (CE), redispersible polymer powders (RDPs), additives and formulation-driven solutions.
This person will not replace the Customer Development Managers. CDMs retain ownership and responsibility at customer level, while the Market Development Manager owns the Construction market strategy, priorities, pipeline and overall commercial result and provides functional leadership to the CDMs for Construction activities.
The ambition is to establish the UK & Ireland as a successful model for Caldic's Construction strategy, with the potential for the role to evolve into a broader European Construction responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the UK & Ireland Construction market strategy and commercial result, including sales, volume, gross profit, pricing strategy, forecasting and opportunity pipeline.
- Lead the commercial transition of the new strategic principal portfolio into Caldic, working jointly with the responsible CDMs and visiting all relevant transferred accounts.
- Protect the existing business by understanding each customer's products, applications, volumes, requirements, competitive position and future opportunities.
- Identify and initiate new projects during the customer transition, transferring day-to-day project follow-up to the responsible CDM while continuing to provide direction and support.
- Map historical business that has been lost through previous supplier portfolio rationalisation and determine which products, applications and volumes remain relevant to customers today.
- Develop strategies using the expanded Caldic/Ingrentia portfolio to recover commercially attractive lost business.
- After successful handover, move decisively into hunter mode, identifying new customers, applications and opportunities throughout UK & Ireland.
- Build and continuously improve a detailed map of the UK & Ireland dry-mix Construction market, including customers, technologies, volumes, competitors and addressable opportunities.
- Develop the full Ingrentia Construction proposition, including CE, RDPs and functional additives, alongside the strategic principal portfolio.
- Identify gaps in the current portfolio based on actual customer and market needs and translate these into clear development priorities for the European Application Director and application centre.
- Take a solution-selling approach: understand formulation, performance, cost and processing challenges at customers and mobilise Caldic's technical resources to create differentiated solutions.
- Act as the primary UK & Ireland commercial interface towards the strategic principal, covering pipeline, forecasts, business reviews, market intelligence, customer development and growth initiatives.
- Work closely with the Industry Leader CASC Europe on strategic principal development and the wider European Construction strategy.
- Provide functional leadership to the UK & Ireland CDMs for Construction, setting market priorities, agreeing customer action plans, reviewing pipeline and progress, and challenging execution while respecting local customer ownership.
- Coordinate closely with the Application Director and European technical resources, including regular interaction with the application centre in Spain.
- Develop an effective market-launch approach together with UK management, CASC Europe and Marketing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Reporting & organization
The position reports directly to Damian Todd within Caldic UK, with a dotted reporting line to the Industry Leader CASC Europe.
The Market Development Manager has no direct hierarchical responsibility for the Customer Development Managers but has functional leadership for Construction market development.
The principle should be very simple:
- CDM = owns the customer.
- MDM = owns the market.

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
The MDM determines where Caldic should play, which opportunities should be prioritised and what needs to happen to deliver the Construction growth plan. The CDM owns the customer relationship and execution of the agreed customer action plan.
Formal P&L ownership remains within the UK organisation, while the MDM is empowered and accountable for the commercial drivers behind the Construction result: sales, volume, GP, pricing strategy, forecast and pipeline development.
