Accountancy Director
Cardiff
£90,000-£110,000
This is not a Director title bolted onto what is essentially still a Senior Manager job. The firm needs somebody capable of operating as a genuine senior adviser, taking pressure away from an established leadership team and helping build the next stage of the business. The Accountancy Director will join a highly profitable, family-owned firm with an established client base, strong staff retention and significant investment behind its growth plans. There is already plenty working well. The opportunity is to build on it.
The Role
- You will take ownership of significant client relationships across entrepreneurial start-ups, growing businesses and established owner-managed companies.
- That includes:
- Managing and developing a substantial portfolio
- Leading important face-to-face client relationships
- Providing senior technical input on more complex accounting matters
- Supporting business owners with commercially practical advice
- Leading and developing managers within the team
- Maintaining quality and consistency across client delivery
- Working directly with the existing directors on growth plans
- Developing new business and referral relationships
- Converting opportunities into sustainable fee income
- Helping develop future managers and directors internally

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Accountancy Director needs to combine three things that don't always arrive in the same person: technical credibility, strong relationships and commercial instinct. You are likely to be ACA or ACCA qualified and currently operating at Senior Manager, Associate Director or Director level within a UK practice firm. Experience generating work would be particularly valuable. You don't need to arrive dragging an enormous client book behind you, but you should understand how senior advisers build relationships, create opportunities and turn those into fees.
Why This is Different
- The business has built an unusually loyal team and a number of people have remained for ten years or more.
- At the same time, it isn't standing still.
- New investment is creating capacity for further growth, and the Director will have considerably more influence over that direction than they would typically get inside a large national structure.
- The firm deliberately maintains an in-person model because client relationships are one of its main differentiators. Senior people are visible, accessible and expected to know their clients properly.
