I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

A key part of the role is carrying out cold audit file reviews, remotely and on site across the UK. You will assess files against relevant standards, identify technical and regulatory risks, and produce clear recommendations. You will then discuss your findings with the firm and support them in making practical improvements. Previous file review experience is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided.
Depending on your experience and interests, the role may also include:
- Undertaking other technical and compliance reviews, including engagement quality, practice assurance and anti-money laundering reviews
- Designing and presenting CPD webinars on technical developments and emerging issues
- Developing and delivering practical training for trainees and experienced practice teams
Your day to day responsibilities will include:
- Plan and deliver audit and other technical file reviews to agreed standards and timescales
- Write clear, proportionate reports that explain the issue, the risk and the action required
- Present findings to partners and senior team members with confidence and professional judgement
- Advise firms on the practical application of auditing, accounting and regulatory requirements
- Identify recurring weaknesses and recommend improvements to systems, controls, documentation and team capability
- Respond to technical queries and act as a trusted source of support for member firms
- Contribute to webinars, courses, guidance and other technical resources
- Maintain current technical knowledge and share important developments with colleagues and member firms
- Build strong relationships and deliver an excellent member experience
