Assistant Accountant - Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service

Hays Accountancy & Finance are delighted to be recruiting an Assistant Accountant on behalf of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Accounting Technician to join a well-respected public sector organisation that delivers essential services across Northern Ireland.

Your new role

You will support the delivery of key financial accounting and reporting functions, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and internal controls.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with month-end and year-end accounts and statutory returns.
  • Preparing journals and completing financial reconciliations.
  • Maintaining the fixed asset register, including additions, disposals and revaluations.
  • Producing financial reports, forecasts and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Supporting treasury management activities and cash monitoring.
  • Assisting with business cases, tenders and procurement-related finance activities.
  • Contributing to process improvements and strong financial governance.
  • Building effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Fully qualified Accounting Technician (AAT, ATI or equivalent).
  • Minimum 2 years' experience within a finance environment in a large organisation.
  • Experience preparing journals, reconciliations and supporting month-end/year-end processes.
  • Experience using accounting software and advanced Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Previous public sector experience.
