The Position
Graduate position financial accounting role to support the European Finance Team based in Glasgow. The European Finance Team provides covers a range of financial roles including:
- Financial accounting
- Statutory accounting
- Operational Finance
- System accounting
- Financial Controls
- Taxation
As part of the role support will also be provided towards studying for a professional qualification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA).
This position will work closely with the Finance Management team in Glasgow and Greenock and our accounting teams based in India. The Finance Team supports three major business units within Cigna that provide healthcare to a range of international markets. The team also supports the financial reporting requirements of multiple insurance companies around the world.
The role will involve supervised learning while undertaking a range of financial accounting tasks. The position will rotate between different teams over the initial period to enable the trainee to gain a breadth of understanding of the different aspects of accounting within an insurance company.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Account Reconciliations: Performing balance sheet, and control account reconciliations to identify discrepancies and ensure the integrity of financial data.
- Bookkeeping and Data Entry: Accurately recording, categorizing, and organizing financial transactions, such as invoices, receipts, and expense reports, into a financial management system (Oracle Financials).
- Process Improvements & Control: Assist with process improvements through efficiency tools such as Alteryx and ensure that processes are fully documented including key controls.
- Financial Reporting Assistance: Supporting senior accountants in the preparation of monthly management accounts, financial statements, and other internal/external reports for management review.
- Auditing Support: Assisting with internal and external audits by preparing documentation, gathering financial information, and helping to address auditor queries.
- Tax and VAT Returns: Helping to prepare and submit VAT returns, as well as business tax returns under guidance.
- Budgeting and Forecasting: Contributing to the annual budget setting process and quarterly forecasts by gathering data, analysing variances, and updating projections.
- Continuous Learning: Actively engaging in a professional study program (often company-funded and with study leave entitlement), with the expectation of passing examinations and achieving a recognised qualification.

Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: degree-level qualification or AAT membership
- Numeracy and Attention to Detail: Strong mathematical skills and a high degree of accuracy are vital for handling financial data.
- IT Proficiency: Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel (vlookups, pivot tables), and a willingness to learn specific accounting software.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to liaise effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders at all levels.
- Organisation and Time Management: The ability to plan, prioritise, and manage a varied workload to meet tight deadlines, especially when balancing work and study.
- Attitude: Proactive, self-motivated, resilient, and committed to professional development and a career in finance.
- Teamwork: The ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and offer support to other departments.
