Purchase Ledger & Accounts Assistant
Location: South Shields, NE34
Salary: £25,420 – £32,000 per annum (DOE)
Position: Full-time, Permanent
We’re looking for a detail-focused Purchase Ledger & Accounts Assistant to join a small, dynamic finance team in South Shields.
This is a hands-on role covering purchase ledger, accounts payable, and general accounting responsibilities.
You’ll play an important part in keeping supplier payments accurate and on time, maintaining financial records, and supporting the wider finance team across month-end and day-to-day accounting activity.
Responsibilities:
- Managing the purchase ledger and supporting the accounts payable process, including:
- Processing and verifying supplier invoices using Open Accounts
- Preparing payment runs and reconciling supplier statements
- Investigating and resolving invoice and payment discrepancies
- Accurately entering financial information into the accounting system
- Reconciling intercompany ledger balances
- Supporting month-end close and purchase ledger reconciliations
- Maintaining the fixed asset register in Excel
- Calculating and posting monthly depreciation to the nominal ledger
- Producing reports and information to support financial analysis
- Maintaining accurate and organised records for audit purposes
- Working with internal teams and suppliers to resolve queries
- Providing support and holiday cover across the wider finance team

About You:
We’re looking for someone with previous experience in a finance or accounts environment who is comfortable working with financial systems and handling detailed transactional information.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience within purchase ledger, accounts payable, or a similar finance role
- Good knowledge of bookkeeping and general accounting principles
- Experience using accounting software; Open Accounts experience would be advantageous
- Strong Excel and data entry skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- The ability to identify and resolve discrepancies
- Good understanding of supplier accounts and payment processes
- Confident communication skills when dealing with suppliers and internal teams
- A proactive, organised approach and the ability to work as part of a small team
