The energy transition is critical to delivering a net zero carbon future and National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is right at the heart it.

As a nation, we’re working towards the goal of net zero carbon by 2050. At National Grid, we’re committed to helping Britain reach this target by building a cleaner, greener energy system. But we can’t do this alone. We're looking for people who are brimming with enthusiasm and bursting with ideas to help us build and run a cleaner energy system for the future. So, join us as a Accounts Receivable Finance Assistant and find your superpower.

We are looking for 1x Part-Time (16 hours Tuesday and Thursday) Finance Assistants to support the Payments Received Team in our AR function. As part of the Accounts Receivable team, you will play a key role in delivering a professional and efficient service to both internal and external customers of National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).

This role is based out of our Plymouth office, and we’d hope to see you in the office full-time to complete your training. Thereafter, we are happy to accommodate hybrid working with circa 1 days in the office per week. We’re also happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

What You'll Do

Payments (Payments Received)

  • Process a high volume of payments (BACS, credit/debit cards, cheques, direct debits).
  • Process refunds for duplicate payments, cancelled work, errors, etc.
  • Match and allocate debits/credits accurately and promptly.
  • Investigate and resolve daily suspense items and highlight any fraudulent activity.
  • Upload files and manage data interfaces between NGED systems, resolving any errors.
  • Understand and reconcile debtor ledger entries on a daily and month end basis.
  • Prioritise workload to meet daily and monthly targets in a high volume environment.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external customers to resolve queries and maintain service excellence.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
