About the Role
A leading global technology organisation is looking for an experienced Acoustic Research Engineer to join its specialist audio research team. The team is developing advanced immersive-audio and wearable technologies, with a focus on creating realistic virtual sound experiences and improving communication in challenging listening environments.
This is a hands-on research role involving acoustic measurement, audio signal processing, auditory perception experiments and the development of tools and methods for acoustic data acquisition and analysis. The role will be based in a newly developed specialist audio laboratory featuring anechoic chambers, configurable acoustic environments and advanced audio-capture facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop systems, user interfaces and protocols for acoustic and behavioural data acquisition.
- Create audio data-processing and experimental tools using Python, MATLAB and MaxMSP.
- Design and conduct acoustic measurements and auditory perception experiments.
- Configure complex data-collection systems involving microphones, loudspeakers, prototype devices and human participants.
- Process, clean and analyse acoustic and audio-signal data.
- Improve and automate large-scale audio data-collection processes.
- Use specialist acoustics knowledge to solve new and complex experimental challenges.
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers across audio, hardware, systems and software disciplines.
- Integrate data-acquisition and processing algorithms into research platforms.
- Produce technical reports documenting research methods, findings and results.

Essential Requirements
- Master’s degree in acoustics, audio engineering, signal processing, electrical engineering, computer science or another relevant technical discipline.
- At least three years of industry experience in audio technology development, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least three years of experience designing and conducting audio or acoustic experiments in controlled laboratory environments.
- Strong practical knowledge of acoustics, including room-acoustic properties and acoustic test and measurement equipment.
- Strong experience processing and analysing audio signals.
- At least three years of programming experience using Python, MATLAB or MaxMSP for audio applications.
- Experience designing acoustic data-collection setups involving microphones, loudspeakers and complex capture systems.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research environment.

Preferred Experience
- Real-time audio programming using C or C++.
- Psychoacoustics or auditory perception.
- Spatial audio, room acoustics or physical acoustics.
- PyTorch or another machine-learning framework.
- Prototype audio or wearable hardware.
- Motion-tracking systems.
- Large-scale automated data collection and analysis.
- Designing or setting up acoustic laboratory spaces.
- Experiments involving human participants.
- Producing technical reports, research papers or publications.
Candidate Profile
This role requires a specialist, hands-on acoustics background rather than general audio engineering, sound design or audio-production experience. Candidates should be able to demonstrate practical experience with controlled acoustic experiments, room acoustics, signal processing, measurement equipment and experimental audio data collection.
