About the Role
Actemium Automation Teesside is seeking an experienced Software Control Systems Engineer to support the design, development, commissioning, and maintenance of industrial automation and control systems across manufacturing and process industries.
Working alongside project managers, engineers, and customers, you'll deliver reliable automation solutions from concept through to commissioning and handover. You'll also play a key role in leveraging emerging AI technologies to enhance engineering efficiency and customer solutions.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, people-focused business delivering complex automation projects across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and commission PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA systems.
- Design and implement industrial control software and automation solutions.
- Produce software specifications, test plans, and technical documentation.
- Configure and integrate PLCs, drives, instrumentation, safety, and communication systems.
- Conduct FAT, SAT, testing, and system validation activities.
- Support installation, commissioning, fault finding, and optimization on customer sites.
- Collaborate with project teams, customers, and suppliers throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications, engineering standards, and health & safety requirements.
- Contribute to project planning, estimating, and continuous improvement initiatives.

About You
You'll have:
- Proven experience in industrial automation, control systems, or software engineering.
- Strong PLC programming and commissioning experience within industrial environments.
- Experience with platforms such as Siemens (TIA Portal/PCS7), Rockwell (FactoryTalk/PlantPAx), Schneider Electric, or Mitsubishi.
- Knowledge of HMI, SCADA, industrial networks, drives, and system integration.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, and Modbus TCP/IP.
- Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to travel to customer sites, including occasional overnight stays.
- A full UK driving licence (or ability to travel to project locations).

Desirable:
- Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent in Electrical, Automation, Control Systems, or Software Engineering.
- Experience with safety systems and safety PLCs.
- Knowledge of robotics, motion control, or process automation.
- Experience delivering projects from design through to commissioning.
- Exposure to power and energy automation projects, including substation SCADA, data centre power management, COPA-DATA zenon, or Siemens WinCC OA.
