Actionstep Developer / Configurator
Overview
We are looking for an experienced, self-starting and diligent Actionstep Developer / Configurator to join our team. This is a hands-on implementation role for someone who can contribute immediately on client assignments, designing, configuring, testing and deploying Actionstep solutions for law firms.
The successful candidate will have strong practical experience of Actionstep and be comfortable configuring the platform across different practice areas and legal processes. They must also be confident working directly with clients, able to communicate credibly with fee earners, case handlers, business analysts and technical teams, and capable of guiding conversations towards the detail and decisions needed to complete the build.
The primary focus is hands-on Actionstep configuration and solution delivery rather than project management or general business analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Configure and customise Actionstep to meet agreed client, practice area and matter requirements.
- Design and configure matter types, workflows, workflow steps and automation, participant types, custom data, tasks, roles, permissions and related platform settings.
- Build clear, efficient and maintainable workflows that guide users through legal and operational processes.
- Configure document templates, merge fields, email templates and document automation.
- Configure webforms, client intake, matter creation and other data-capture processes.
- Configure and support time recording, billing, accounting and reporting requirements within the agreed implementation scope.
- Support integrations between Actionstep and other law firm systems, including document management, finance, Microsoft 365 and other third-party platforms.
- Work with technical specialists on APIs, data mappings, integration workflows and troubleshooting where bespoke development is required.
- Participate confidently in client meetings, workshops, demonstrations and solution playbacks, asking focused questions and confirming the detail required to complete the configuration.
- Support data migration activities, including mapping, validation and testing.
- Carry out configuration and integration testing, support UAT, troubleshoot issues and resolve defects.
- Support go-live, provide knowledge transfer and maintain clear configuration, testing and implementation documentation.
- Stay current with Actionstep functionality and legal technology developments, applying that knowledge to improve delivery and reusable Actionstep solutions and tools.

Essential Requirements
- At least two years of substantial hands-on Actionstep experience within a law firm, Actionstep implementation partner, legal technology consultancy or similar environment.
- Experience independently configuring Actionstep matter types, workflows, automation, custom data, participant types, permissions and other core platform functionality.
- Practical experience configuring Actionstep document and email templates and document automation.
- Experience supporting Actionstep implementations, enhancements or migrations from requirements through configuration, testing and go-live.
- Good understanding of legal practice management, matter management and the operational environment of a law firm.
- Sufficient technical understanding of APIs, data mappings and system integrations to configure, test and troubleshoot integration-enabled processes and work effectively with technical specialists.
- Confident client-facing communication skills, with the ability to work credibly with legal, operational and technical stakeholders.
- Ability to ask focused questions, identify gaps, explain configuration options and translate agreed requirements into practical Actionstep solutions.
- Strong analytical, testing and troubleshooting skills with excellent attention to detail and a commitment to supportable, maintainable configuration.
- Ability to produce clear configuration and testing documentation and manage multiple delivery priorities.

Desirable
- Experience across more than one Actionstep implementation, law firm, practice area or matter type.
- Experience with Actionstep document automation, reporting, data migration or integrations.
- Experience with Actionstep APIs or more technical integration and development work.
- Relevant Actionstep training, certification or demonstrable advanced platform capability.
Development & Progression
The role offers scope to deepen Actionstep expertise, work across a growing range of client implementations and contribute to the development of our reusable Actionstep solutions and tools. Progression will be based on demonstrated platform capability, delivery quality, client confidence and contribution to reusable solutions.
Working Model
This is a hybrid role. A significant proportion of delivery may be completed remotely, but client assignments can require regular on-site attendance, including a weekly presence where required. The successful candidate must be able and willing to travel to client sites in line with the needs of each assignment. The balance of remote and on-site working will vary by client.
