South Derbyshire District Council is seeking to recruit two enthusiastic and motivated Active Communities & Health Coaches to join our successful Active Communities & Health Team.
These roles provide an opportunity to deliver high-quality physical activity, health and wellbeing programmes that make a positive difference to communities across South Derbyshire. Working with a wide range of residents, partners and stakeholders, you will coordinate, lead and deliver engaging activities that support healthier, more active lifestyles.
Role 1
This role will play a key part in the delivery of our successful Get Active in the Forest programme, supporting residents of all ages and abilities to become more active and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.
- Working across a diverse programme, you will coordinate and deliver a range of activities including walking and Nordic walking groups, cycling, archery, chair-based exercise, jogging groups and holiday activities for children and families.
- You will be confident adapting sessions to meet the needs, abilities and motivations of different participants, creating inclusive and welcoming environments that encourage sustained participation.
- A significant aspect of the role involves working with and supporting volunteers who are integral to the success of the programme. You will be expected to recruit, motivate and develop volunteers, helping to build their confidence and skills while fostering a positive and supportive team culture.
- We're looking for someone who can engage effectively with a wide range of audiences, from children and young people through to older adults and individuals with varying levels of confidence, fitness and experience. You will be passionate about helping people overcome barriers to participation, tailoring your approach to ensure activities are accessible, enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Whilst physical activity experience is important, equally important is the ability to build relationships, inspire confidence and respond flexibly to the differing needs of participants, communities and projects.
Role 2
This role will lead the coordination and delivery of our evening youth provision across South Derbyshire, creating safe, welcoming and supportive environments where young people can socialise, develop new skills and have a voice in shaping the activities available to them. Working through a youth work approach, you will build positive relationships with young people, encourage participation and support them to identify and influence the activities, projects and opportunities that matter most to them. The role will focus on engaging young people who may benefit from structured, positive opportunities within their local communities, helping them to build confidence, resilience, aspirations and social connections.
- Alongside leading youth groups, targeted projects and outreach activity, you will support the planning and delivery of the Council's wider Active Communities programmes, including School Enrichment and Corporate bookings, and our flagship Summer Activities programme which include the Playscheme and Holiday Activity and Food programmes.
- Whilst sport and physical activity form part of the offer, this is not solely a sports coaching role. We are looking for someone who can engage, motivate and support young people through a broad range of activities and experiences, creating environments that are inclusive, youth-led and responsive to local need.

You will be a confident and organised individual with a passion for physical activity, health and community engagement. Experience of leading activities, working with diverse groups and building positive relationships will be essential.

Why Join Us?
This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing team at the forefront of delivering the Council's Get Moving South Derbyshire Active Wellbeing Strategy. You'll play a key role in shaping healthier, more active communities while gaining valuable experience within a progressive local authority environment.
Please note: Both roles are 18.5 hours per week and will require a combination of daytime, evening and occasional weekend working to meet service demands.
As our programmes continue to grow, there may be opportunities for the successful candidates to increase their hours through service expansion, the development of new projects, and the securing of external funding.
If you're passionate about helping people get active and improving community wellbeing, we'd love to hear from you.
