Acute Physician - Consultant

An excellent opportunity is available for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join an established acute medical service in Wales. The successful candidate will help lead and strengthen acute medical services, with a particular focus on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), front-door medicine, and senior clinical leadership.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of acute medicine, including designing new care pathways and more integrated models of care.

The Role

The successful Consultant will provide senior clinical leadership within the acute medical assessment service and oversee the medical intake into the Acute Medical Unit.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Providing senior clinical leadership to patients within the assessment unit.
  • Overseeing medical admissions and the acute medical intake.
  • Supporting out-of-hours work as part of the Acute Physician rota.
  • Supporting the continued development of an integrated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service.
  • Contributing to the transformation and improvement of acute medical services.
  • Working closely with colleagues across the wider medical services.
  • Developing new clinical pathways and integrated models of care.
  • Working across organizational boundaries where appropriate.
  • Supporting service improvement, innovation, and clinical development.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • GMC registration
  • GMC licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Be on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine, or
  • Be eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview and have passed the relevant exit examination, or
  • Hold an appropriate statement of eligibility for registration issued by the GMC, or an equivalent recognized European specialist qualification allowing direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Relevant higher degree such as PhD, MD, or MSc
  • Teaching qualification or higher qualification in medical education

Experience

The Successful Candidate Should Demonstrate:

  • Experience developing effective working relationships with colleagues across all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience working with management and clinical colleagues to improve services.
  • An ability to work in partnership with other agencies.
  • Experience of teaching and training postgraduate and undergraduate clinical staff.
  • Experience contributing to clinical development and service improvement.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Development and commissioning of clinical services.
  • Research experience in Geriatric Medicine or General Internal Medicine.
