Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council

Administration Assistant – Parental Leave Cover (Fixed Term – Spring Term to Easter)

Monday – Friday, 8:45 am – 3:30 pm (term time only) – 30 hours

We are a friendly and welcoming special school for pupils with severe learning difficulties, based in Olton, Solihull. We also have a Satellite Centre in Shirley, which caters for our reception pupils and our 14–19 provision.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and organised Administration Assistant to provide parental leave cover from January until Easter 2027 (Spring Term). Although you will be based primarily at our Satellite Centre, you will also be required to work flexibly across both sites as the needs of the school require.

Please note: Although the post begins in January, there will be a requirement to attend some training during December.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous administrative experience who would like to gain experience within a school environment or continue their career in education.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The Satellite Centre office also serves as the main reception area. The role is varied, with busy periods welcoming visitors, pupils and professionals, balanced by quieter times during the school day, allowing you to complete a range of administrative duties.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent administration, organisational and ICT skills.
  • Works well as part of a wider team but is equally confident working independently.
  • Has initiative, enthusiasm and a positive, flexible approach.
  • Is able to adapt to the changing needs of a busy school environment.

If you enjoy working in a rewarding environment where no two days are the same, we would be delighted to receive your application.

This post is covered by the Fluency Duty, as outlined in the Code of Practice on the English Language Requirements for Public Sector Workers.
