I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Disclosure and Barring Service
This post involves direct contact with children and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. You are therefore required to declare whether you have any criminal convictions (or cautions, reprimands or warnings) including those which are ‘spent’. The amendments to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) provide that when applying for certain jobs and activities, certain convictions and cautions are considered ‘protected’. This means that they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. Details of the filtering rules can be found on www.gov.uk/dbs. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Ministry of Justice website or see https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/new-guidance-on-the-rehabilitation-of-offenders-act-1974.
