Adult Psychiatrist - Consultant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Adult Psychiatrist to join a progressive Mental Health service in Wales. This role offers the chance to provide high-quality psychiatric care while contributing to the ongoing development of community mental health and crisis services.

The successful candidate will hold overall clinical responsibility for patients under their care, overseeing Care and Treatment Plans, supporting multidisciplinary working and driving service improvement. The service is committed to expanding crisis care pathways and developing innovative models that improve patient access and outcomes.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide Consultant-led assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adult mental health patients.
  • Hold overall clinical responsibility for patients within the service.
  • Develop and oversee individual Care and Treatment Plans.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary community and inpatient teams.
  • Undertake psychiatric assessments, mental state examinations and risk assessments.
  • Manage outpatient clinics, medication reviews and follow-up appointments.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and clinical governance.
  • Support clinical audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff where appropriate.
  • Participate in the 1:14 consultant on-call rota.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and GMC Good Medical Practice guidance.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practise.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for CCT within six months of interview.
  • Section 12 Approved.
  • Welsh Approved Clinician (AC) Status.

Desirable

  • Further relevant degree or diploma.
  • Teaching qualification or higher qualification in medical education.

Experience

Essential

  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary working.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
  • Experience leading and completing clinical audit.

Desirable

  • Experience working with clinical and managerial colleagues to improve services.
  • Partnership working with external agencies.
  • Experience developing and modernising mental health services.
  • Research experience in mental health.
  • Experience fulfilling the Approved Clinician role under the Mental Health Act 1983.

  • Strong clinical leadership skills.
  • Excellent multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of Prudent Healthcare principles.
  • Strong IT and information system skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in quality improvement methodology.
  • Clinical competence in applying the Mental Health Act 1983 and Mental Capacity Act 2005.

  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Support education and supervision of junior doctors.
  • Contribute to clinical governance and audit.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and appraisal.
