Job Opportunity: Advanced Biomedical Scientist

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Blood Sciences – Blood Transfusion department at the Barnsley Hospital site, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, for a substantive Band 7 Advanced Biomedical Scientist.

Role Summary

The post holder must demonstrate specialist knowledge and will be responsible for the operational management of the blood bank laboratory, ensuring a quality, continuous, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic service. They will support the Blood Transfusion Manager to ensure provision of service to patients from Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Primary Care Trust.

Responsibilities

  • Quality and Clinical Governance: Implement and oversee quality management across the laboratory sections.
  • Staff Development and Training: Supervise Registered BMS, Trainee BMS, and Biomedical Science Assistant grades.
  • Information Management: Provide information and progress reports on staffing, workload, performance, and non-conformities to the Scientific Lead BMS section leads and Blood Sciences Manager.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in strategic planning for the department.
  • Supplies Management: Manage supplies for the laboratory.
  • Capital Procurement: Assist in capital procurement processes.
  • Personnel Management: Allocate annual leave and monitor staff attendance.

Department Overview

The Blood Sciences Department is divided into two main services:

  • Automated Blood Sciences: Includes Automated Clinical Chemistry, Routine Haematology, Routine Coagulation (NGH), and Blood Transfusion.
  • Specialist Blood Sciences: Includes Cell Markers, Haemolysis, Immunology, and Specialised Clinical Chemistry & Toxicology.
