The Specialist Gynaecology Nurse
The Specialist Gynaecology Nurse will support the delivery and development of the Gynaecology Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) and Faster Diagnosis pathway, ensuring patients receive timely, coordinated, and high-quality care from referral through diagnosis and onward management.
The post holder will undertake specialist telephone triage and assessment, using clinical expertise and national guidance to direct patients to the most appropriate diagnostic pathway and support the 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard.
The role will include nurse-led outpatient hysteroscopy clinics for diagnostic assessment and treatment, including pipelle biopsy, patient assessment, and e-consenting. The post holder will provide clear advice on investigations, medications, results, and follow-up, while supporting patients sensitively throughout the diagnostic process.
Working with Gynaecology Oncology, Cancer Services, MDT coordinators, and the wider multidisciplinary team, the Specialist Nurse will support effective pathway coordination, clinical decision-making, and service improvement, helping reduce delays and improve patient outcomes.
The post may be offered as a developmental role, depending on experience and skills, including completion of the Bradford Nurse Hysteroscopy Course and associated competencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake specialist telephone triage and assessment of patients referred through the Gynaecology Oncology USC pathway.
- Ensure patients are appropriately triaged and directed to the correct diagnostic pathway in line with national guidance and local protocols.
- Support the 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard by identifying and addressing delays.
- Provide expert nursing assessment, advice, and emotional support to patients with suspected gynaecological cancer.
- Discuss investigations and possible cancer sensitively, providing clear information and addressing concerns.
- Run nurse-led outpatient hysteroscopy clinics, including pipelle biopsy and e-consenting, in line with BSGE guidance and scope of practice.
- Provide advice on medications, procedures, results, and follow-up.
- Work collaboratively with Gynaecology Oncology, Cancer Services, MDT coordinators, and the wider multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and minimize delays.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care using specialist knowledge and clinical judgement.
- Contribute to audit, quality improvement, service development, and pathway redesign.
- Promote clinical excellence, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and compassionate, person-centred care.
- Support early diagnosis, timely investigation, improved patient experience, and outcomes for patients with suspected gynaecological cancer.
