I live with Autism and a Learning Disability and am non-verbal. Although I do not use speech to communicate, I have my own ways of expressing myself and communicating my needs, preferences, and feelings. It is important that my support team understand and use total communication approaches to ensure my voice is always heard. It is also important that when speaking with me, that verbal communication is clear and concise, as I often struggle to understand.

I require 1:1 support; however, I value my personal space and prefer support to be provided from a respectful distance. Due to my sensory needs, I can become uncomfortable when people are too close to me, and I generally prefer people to support from behind or alongside me rather than directly in my personal space. My team should be confident, patient, respectful, and able to follow my support plan consistently.

Routine is extremely important to me and helps me feel safe, comfortable, and happy. I attend Day Service Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm and benefit from familiar people and routines. When travelling to my day service, I prefer using a familiar driver or taxi, and my mum and dad also help support me at times.

I enjoy watching films, listening to the radio, and spending time enjoying my favourite movies. I am a big foodie and particularly enjoy baking, icing, and decorating cakes. Supporting me to enjoy these interests and maintain meaningful routines will be an important part of the role.

Initially, support will focus on helping me transition successfully into my new home and establish positive routines.

To support me to have the Best Life Possible, my team have specialist training in Positive Behaviour Support, Autism, Learning Disabilities, and Total Communication, ensuring they have the knowledge and confidence to meet my individual needs effectively.

The ideal candidate will have a Level 3 in Social Care and strong experience in mental health, autism and sensory communication, and physical health and PBS

If you do not have a qualification, you will need to have experience in social care and be prepared to work towards this.

You will know how to connect with people and be passionate about supporting people to live independently. You will also be a brilliant mentor and share your skills and experiences with your colleagues.

We will develop your talents with a range of specialist training, including the opportunity to learn Positive Behaviour Support methods, Makaton and the Picture Exchange System.

During recruitment you will meet the people we support in their home. This will allow you to see their wonderful personalities first-hand and fully understand the level of support that they require.
