The Vacancy

This is a hands-on technical role responsible for Laser Machining as part of a strategic customer programme. The Laser Technician will develop machine parameters and procedures to enable the production of high-quality components in accordance with engineering specifications, whilst ensuring production targets, deadlines, and quality standards are achieved.

Reporting to the Head of Manufacturing Operations, the role works closely with Manufacturing Engineers, Project Managers, Programme Managers, and customers to support project delivery. The role carries responsibility for machine operation, process adherence, and quality output.

The position requires a self-motivated individual who can work independently, manage workload effectively, and respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. A proactive, detail-oriented approach is essential, with the ability to troubleshoot issues, maintain high standards of quality, and contribute to the successful delivery of customer projects.

Main Responsibilities

  • Operate and programme DMG LASERTEC machinery in accordance with customer specifications, engineering drawings, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the required quality standards, meeting customer expectations, deadlines, and production deliverables.
  • Work alongside engineering team to set up, adjust, and monitor machine parameters to optimise performance, efficiency, and product quality.
  • Interpret technical drawings, CAD data, and work instructions to manufacture components accurately.
  • Conduct in process inspections and quality checks to ensure parts conform to specification.
  • Identify and troubleshoot machine, process, or quality issues, escalating where necessary to minimise downtime.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance, cleaning, and basic fault finding activities to maintain equipment reliability.
  • Maintain and promote Health & Safety (H&S) standards, ensuring all activities adhere to company policies, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Support the planning and coordination of work activities, ensuring resources, tooling, and equipment are available to meet project timelines.
  • Learn to operate machinery and equipment where required to support production needs and maintain workflow continuity.
  • Identifying and escalating risks, delays, or constraints to stakeholders.
  • Ensure work areas are maintained to a high standard of housekeeping and organisation (5S principles).
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety within the areas.
  • Provide clear communication between operations, project manager, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with customer requirements, quality standards, and internal procedures.

Person Specification

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience operating CNC and/or laser machining equipment or similar advanced manufacturing equipment.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, engineering principles, and production workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work instructions.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Health & Safety practices, risk awareness, and safe working procedures within a manufacturing environment.
  • Practical, hands-on capability with machinery and equipment, with a strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new processes and technologies.
  • Experience conducting in-process inspections and verifying component quality against specification.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing work to exacting quality standards.
  • Good problem solving skills, with the ability to identify, troubleshoot, and escalate machine, process, or quality issues effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload to meet production schedules, customer deadlines, and delivery requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering, quality, and production teams.
  • Organised and proactive, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Basic IT literacy, including Microsoft Office and production or machine control software systems.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Previous experience of CNC machine programming to be able to help with programming of Laser equipment.
  • Proactive, hands-on approach with a strong willingness to take ownership and get tasks completed.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude toward learning new skills and processes.
  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to work across different areas and respond to changing priorities.
  • Comfortable stepping into unfamiliar tasks and figuring things out with minimal supervision.
  • Strong work ethic with a focus on reliability and accountability.
  • Practical mindset with the ability to identify problems and implement straightforward solutions.
  • Team-oriented, with a willingness to support others and contribute to overall operational success.
  • Good awareness of shop floor dynamics and the importance of keeping things moving efficiently.
