Advisory Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (QToD)

The Deaf Education Team (DET) is a specialist team made up of two QToDs and an Audiological Technician/Support Worker. As part of the wider Inclusion Service, DET is a welcoming, supportive and knowledgeable team who works with babies, children and young people (CYP) from birth onwards. The team provides specialist advice and support to families, schools and pre-school settings, helping to remove barriers to learning, promote inclusion and ensure deaf CYP are supported to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Here is what one of our team members says about working in the DET:

“I thoroughly enjoy being a part of this team. Children and young people genuinely come first. As a QToD, you're trusted to use your expertise, supported by experienced colleagues, and given the freedom to make a real difference. It's a welcoming, collaborative team where no one works in isolation and everyone's contribution is valued.”

As an Advisory QToD, you will work as a member of the Support for Learning Service, contributing flexibly and collaboratively within a wider team. You will manage your own caseload of deaf CYP, providing specialist advice, support and direct teaching to help reduce barriers to learning.

A key part of the role will involve working closely with families, pre-school settings, schools and other professionals to promote inclusion and support the best possible outcomes for deaf CYP and their families.

Your daily routine will include providing specialist assessment, advice and teaching support for deaf CYP. You will work closely with families to offer guidance, encouragement and practical support, which may include British Sign Language. You will build strong relationships with educational settings to promote inclusive practice and high-quality provision, as well as identifying and/or delivering training for settings, schools, families and professionals to increase understanding of deafness and effective support strategies. Using specialist equipment and assistive listening devices, you will support deaf CYP to access learning and communication. You will work collaboratively with health professionals, parents/carers, ALNCos and education staff to minimise educational barriers, contribute to IDPs and Person Centred Reviews, develop outcomes, write reports and monitor progress in line with the Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales 2021 and associated legislation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
