Job Description

Aerothermal Engineer

Location: Derby/Bristol

Why Join Rolls-Royce?

At Rolls-Royce, we are proud to be a business that has truly helped to shape the modern world and are committed to always being a force for progress; powering, protecting, and connecting people everywhere.

By joining Rolls-Royce, you'll have the opportunity to work on world-class solutions, supported by a culture that believes individuality is our greatest strength, and all perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds help us innovate and enable our high-performance culture.

Position Summary

An Aerothermal Engineer is responsible for the development of Aerothermal capability, both engine delivery from original inception and discussion with the airframers, through NPI, EDP, on to Production and Fleet support, and technology delivery from TRL1 - 7 in conjunction with our strategic partners. The Aerothermal capability covers gas path aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and combustion and relies on skills in Computational Fluid Dynamics at a range of levels of fidelity and testing capability in a range of TRL rigs. Design and capability generation relies also on a knowledge and understanding of the interaction of these components both locally and at an engine level.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Define and capture aerothermal requirements at system, sub-system, and component level, ensuring robust flow-down from higher-level requirements.
  • Develop and evaluate concepts for gas path aerothermal systems using analytical methods to support platform and powerplant-level trade studies and concept selection.
  • Ensure delivered concepts are resilient to uncertainties in engine interactions and manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and optimize gas path aerothermal systems across the organization.
  • Perform technical analysis of gas path aerothermal functionality at component and sub-system level, selecting appropriate tools and methods for each stage of the product lifecycle.
  • Plan and execute verification and validation activities, including specifying and interpreting test and measurement campaigns, calibrating models, and quantifying uncertainties.
  • Manage knowledge, information, and data for aerothermal systems, ensuring compliance with data management procedures and the production of technical documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Provide production and in-service support, including technical analysis, issue resolution, and the implementation of modifications as required.
  • Drive capability development, including improvements to people, processes, methods, tools, and technology, and secure relevant internal or external funding as necessary.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
