AGV Subject Matter Expert

Salary £47,322 per annum, 10% annual bonus potential, 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, and a company pension scheme with highly competitive contribution rates

Fixed Term, Full time, 41 hours per week

As Royal Mail Engineering continues to evolve and expand, we are looking for an AGV Subject Matter Expert to join our team at our Midlands Super hub and play a key role in shaping the future of automation. In this hands-on role, the AGV subject matter expert provides expert guidance and support across the site and drives automation projects, process optimisation, fault finding, and innovation.

The Role

  • Act as the go-to expert for automation systems, providing technical leadership on complex engineering challenges (e.g., mechanical, electrical, automation, process, or reliability)
  • Lead on small modifications to the AGV fleet to include system upgrades, and design reviews, ensuring all safety requirements and regulations are met or exceeded
  • Provide technical leadership and support to teams in solving complex engineering challenges
  • Mentor and train engineers, technicians, on best practices, systems knowledge, and safe work practices
  • Drive continuous improvement through process optimisation, fault finding, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, IEC), and internal quality and safety management systems
  • Support safety audits, risk assessments, inspections, and regulatory reviews from a technical and compliance standpoint
  • Collaborate with suppliers, contractors, and consultants to resolve technical issues and deliver solutions with safety compliance integrated throughout

Attendance

Panama shift working, 2 weeks of days (07:00 - 19:00) and 2 weeks of nights (19:00 - 07:00)

  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday to Sunday
  • Week 2: Wednesday & Thursday

About you

You need to demonstrate the following skills and experience on your application:

  • HNC/HND (Level 4/5) in electrical and mechanical (essential), degree (Level 6) in an engineering discipline (desirable)
  • An engineering technical leader with knowledge of systems, design principles, and industry standards
  • Experience of leading and training teams of engineers
  • Experienced with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to include integration, diagnostics, performance optimisation (essential)
  • A good understanding of fleet management systems for AGV coordination, path control, and load management
  • The ability to solve complex engineering problems and deliver innovative, safe solutions.
  • Experienced with PLC systems including Siemens S7, SIMATIC, SIMOVE, and CODESYS
  • Familiarity with industry-specific software, tools, and design platforms (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, SCADA, CMMS) and knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME, IEEE, ISA, NFPA, API, ISO)
  • Strong focus on safety culture and risk management with experience of applying safety standards and regulations
  • Continuous improvement activity, experienced in root cause analysis, data interpretation, and automation system optimisation
  • Working knowledge of SCADA systems, certified or willing to gain PUWER Assessor and IOSH Managing Safety qualifications
