AI & Automation Lead

Bolton, Hybrid (2 days a week on site)

AI/LLM Engineering | GenAI | Agentic AI | Technical Leadership | Automation | n8n | Cloud

We’re looking for an AI & Automation Lead to take technical ownership across a growing AI and Automation function.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone with a strong background in AI and LLM engineering who enjoys solving complex problems, setting technical direction and helping other engineers do their best work.

Working closely with the Head of Data, AI & Automation, you’ll take the wider strategy and roadmap and turn it into scalable, secure and production-ready solutions.

The team works across both AI engineering and automation, currently including n8n and Blue Prism, with a longer-term ambition to bring these areas closer together and evolve towards more intelligent, AI-driven automation.

You’ll be the technical lead across AI, LLM and automation delivery, making key architecture decisions and establishing how solutions are designed, built and deployed.

You’ll:

  • Own technical architecture and direction across AI/LLM solutions and automation workflows
  • Set and maintain engineering, coding, model development and deployment standards
  • Remain hands-on with technically complex or novel AI work where your expertise can add value
  • Review technical approaches and act as an escalation point for complex engineering problems
  • Lead AI Engineers and Automation/RPA Specialists day-to-day, including work allocation, technical guidance, removing blockers and supporting their development
  • Help shape the move from traditional RPA and workflow automation towards more AI-driven and agentic approaches
  • Document and implement a best-practice n8n development framework for automation delivery
  • Develop reusable assets, templates and engineering best practice across AI and automation
  • Evaluate AI models, frameworks and automation platforms, making recommendations around adoption, build vs buy, replacement and retirement
  • Work with stakeholders to identify opportunities where AI and automation can improve products, services and internal processes
  • Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, maintainable and developed responsibly

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Hands-on experience building and deploying AI/ML solutions into production, including production coding experience
  • Strong knowledge of LLMs, Generative AI and agentic system design
  • Experience taking AI solutions from initial design through to production deployment
  • The ability to make technical architecture decisions and establish engineering standards
  • Experience deploying AI/ML solutions using Azure, AWS or GCP
  • Experience leading, managing or mentoring engineers day-to-day
  • A good understanding of data management, security and compliance within AI delivery
  • Working experience with n8n for workflow automation
  • The ability to explain complex technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Experience with Blue Prism or another RPA platform, MLOps, data engineering, architecture or advanced analytics would be useful, but you don’t need to be an RPA specialist.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to combine hands-on AI engineering with technical leadership.

You’ll stay close to the technology while having the scope to influence how AI solutions are engineered and delivered, develop the people around you and play a key role in the evolution from traditional automation towards AI-led solutions.

You might currently be an AI Engineering Lead, Lead AI Engineer, Principal AI Engineer, Senior AI Engineer or AI Technical Lead looking for broader technical ownership.
