About the Role
Code & Clause Legal is seeking an innovative and commercially minded AI & Emerging Technology Counsel to advise technology companies, AI innovators, startups, and digital businesses navigating the rapidly evolving legal landscape surrounding artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
This role is designed for a lawyer who is passionate about the intersection of law, technology, and innovation. You will support clients developing and deploying AI-powered products, advising on regulatory requirements, commercial arrangements, data use, intellectual property, risk management, and responsible technology adoption.
Working closely with founders, product teams, engineers, and business stakeholders, you will help clients build and scale technology responsibly while navigating emerging regulatory frameworks.
The successful candidate will combine strong legal analysis with curiosity about emerging technologies and the ability to provide practical, commercially focused advice in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities
AI Legal Advisory
- Advise clients developing, deploying, and commercialising artificial intelligence products.
- Support businesses in identifying and managing legal risks associated with AI adoption.
- Provide practical guidance on AI governance, compliance, and responsible AI practices.
- Advise on AI product development, deployment models, and commercial use cases.
- Monitor developments in AI regulation and provide strategic guidance to clients.
AI Regulation & Governance
- Support clients navigating emerging AI regulatory frameworks, including the EU AI Act, UK AI regulatory developments, international AI governance standards, and sector-specific AI regulation.
- Assist with the development of AI governance frameworks, including AI usage policies, responsible AI principles, AI risk assessments, model governance frameworks, human oversight procedures, and AI accountability processes.
- Help clients establish practical approaches to managing AI-related legal and operational risks.

AI Contracts & Technology Transactions
- Draft, review, and negotiate agreements relating to AI and emerging technologies, including AI software licensing agreements, AI development agreements, machine learning deployment agreements, data licensing agreements, AI vendor agreements, technology partnership agreements, and software and platform agreements.
- Advise on contractual issues including AI model ownership, training data rights, intellectual property ownership, usage restrictions, confidentiality, liability allocation, performance obligations, and regulatory compliance responsibilities.
Data, Privacy & AI Risk
- Work alongside privacy specialists to advise clients on AI-related data issues.
- Review data collection, processing, and usage practices for AI systems.
- Support privacy-by-design approaches for AI products.
- Advise on AI training data, data licensing, automated decision-making, profiling risks, data protection impact assessments, and transparency obligations.
Intellectual Property & AI Innovation
- Advise technology businesses on intellectual property issues arising from AI development and deployment.
- Support clients with AI-generated content ownership, software and model ownership, copyright considerations, licensing strategies, open-source AI compliance, and developer and contributor agreements.
- Monitor developments relating to AI inventions, copyright, and intellectual property protection.
Emerging Technology Advisory
- Provide legal support across emerging technology areas, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain and Web3, digital assets, autonomous systems, robotics, digital platforms, and advanced software technologies.
- Research and analyse emerging legal issues affecting technology businesses.
- Develop practical legal frameworks for new technology models.
Client Advisory & Legal Operations
- Act as a trusted adviser to founders, technology leaders, and product teams.
- Translate complex regulatory and technical issues into clear commercial advice.
- Develop AI legal playbooks, risk frameworks, checklists, and client resources.
- Support technology risk assessments and product reviews.
- Contribute to improving legal workflows through AI tools, automation, and legal technology.
Thought Leadership & Market Development
- Create insights, articles, guides, and reports on AI regulation, emerging technology law, responsible AI, technology governance, and digital transformation.
- Support webinars, client briefings, and educational content for technology businesses.

What You’ll Bring
- Qualified solicitor or barrister with 2+ years PQE experience.
- Experience in technology law, commercial law, data protection, intellectual property, or regulatory advisory.
- Strong interest and understanding of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
- Ability to analyse complex legal and technical issues.
- Strong drafting, research, and communication skills.
- Commercial mindset with the ability to advise innovative businesses.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced technology environment.
