AI Enablement and Reliability Engineering Internship
About the Role
CME Group is the world's leading and most diverse derivatives marketplace. We are seeking bright undergraduates to join our Engineering teams for a 12-month placement, focusing on AI Enablement and Reliability Engineering. In this rotational internship, you will work alongside technology teams to integrate AI-driven tooling, build automated reliability frameworks, and support high-availability financial systems. We offer structured mentorship and hands-on experience for critical thinkers and creative problem solvers eager to advance their software and reliability engineering skills.
Principal Accountabilities
- Ensuring system performs under required load to pre-defined standards of performance, availability, and reliability (e.g. through high quality system design, and developing automated tests and instrumentation to certify system performance, identify bottlenecks, and isolate root cause of outliers)
- Collaborate on system architecture, AI tooling integration, and reliability design discussions
- Assist in requirements gathering for AI enablement initiatives and system resilience features
- Write clean, high-quality code and automation scripts adhering to software engineering and site reliability standards
- Identify opportunities to streamline software workflows using AI-assisted developer tools and automated testing

Competencies
- Analytical mindset with strong troubleshooting skills for complex distributed systems
- Strong attention to detail
- Curiosity for artificial intelligence, machine learning tools, and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices
- Happy to take personal responsibility and be accountable for outcomes
- Proven communication, analysis and problem solving skills
- Customer focused with a talent for building excellent working relationships with business and technical stakeholders
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and effective prioritization of workload
Candidate Criteria
- 2 Years University in Computer Science or equivalent - This is a placement year opportunity for students moving into their third year
- Coding proficiency in Python, Java, or C++, with familiarity with scripting and automation
- Foundational understanding of software reliability concepts, system monitoring, or AI/ML principles
- Eligibility to work in the UK. Please note that successful applicants will be based in the office in Belfast at least two or three days per week
Desirable
- Exposure to AI developer APIs, LLM frameworks, or automated code generation tools
- SQL
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), or Linux platforms
