Our head office is based in the heart of Manchester City Centre - Union on Albert Square.
Context
We employ over 1,000 colleagues across Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham and Cambridge, with industry-leading experts across multiple disciplines. Our digital team is over 20 strong, with a great foundation in AI (Google Gemini). You’ll work closely with our Software Engineering Lead as well as an AI-specific placement student.

What we need
You’ll have a background in Software Engineering, ideally working within one organisation rather than within an agency, using TypeScript or Python.
- You’ll be capable of building AI-enabled software into products and processes: agents, retrieval systems and integrations. Ideally you’ll have done this in a workplace setting, however, if you have a passion for this and can demonstrate capability through your own personal examples then this will be applicable - having built and deployed RAG systems and MCP.
- Automated testing, code review and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) as part of a team.
- Calling large language models (LLMs) from production code, including structured output, error handling, rate limits and retries.
- Cloud experience, we use Google Cloud but any cloud-based experience will be applicable.
- You’ll enjoy collaborating with direct colleagues in the digital team as well as stakeholders to understand business needs and implement improvements.
- A real drive to take ownership and be proactive. Looking to influence change and improvement.

What you’ll be doing
- Design, build and deploy AI solutions: tool-using agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and workflows connected to business systems and data.
- Own use cases from system design through to production and post-launch review.
- Build evaluation datasets, measure accuracy and define where human review is needed.
- Build the surrounding software: APIs, integrations, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and data pipelines.
- Deploy and operate what you build, including containers, monitoring and running costs.
- Work within our security, data protection and AI governance requirements.
- Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code as part of everyday development.
- Help define how the team takes in, prioritises and measures its work.
Our stack
Google Cloud and TypeScript, with the Claude Agent SDK and Gemini Enterprise, integrating with Salesforce, our data warehouse and other business systems. The stack is still evolving, and we care more about how you engineer than which tools you've used.
