AI / Context Engineer
£70,000 - £75,000
Manchester | Hybrid | Full-time | Permanent
I'm working with a growing financial services business that is investing heavily in AI and automation to transform how its advisers work and how customers are supported.
They're looking for an AI / Context Engineer to take ownership of the data, knowledge and retrieval systems behind a new AI-powered platform.
This is a hands-on role combining production data engineering, LLM technology and real-world business impact. You'll be responsible for ensuring the AI has access to the right information, retrieves it accurately and continuously improves.
You'll work closely with software engineers, product leaders and end users to turn complex data into reliable, practical AI solutions.
The role
You'll take ownership of everything between raw data sources and the context provided to an AI model.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building and maintaining production data pipelines using Python, SQL and APIs.
- Connecting and integrating data from multiple internal and external sources.
- Designing and optimising knowledge structures, retrieval processes and RAG systems.
- Improving how AI models access, interpret and use information.
- Building evaluation frameworks to measure AI answer accuracy, reliability and data freshness.
- Identifying and resolving issues with inaccurate responses, outdated data or poor retrieval.
- Establishing data governance processes, including source approvals and appropriate handling of personal information.
- Working with technical and non-technical teams to drive adoption, provide training and develop clear documentation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why consider this opportunity?
This isn't a role where you'll simply maintain existing pipelines or experiment with AI in isolation.
You'll be working on a live AI initiative with clear business applications, taking ownership of the knowledge and data infrastructure that makes it work.
You'll have the opportunity to:
- Build and improve AI systems that are used in day-to-day operations.
- Take technical ownership of a critical part of the AI architecture.
- Work with modern LLM and RAG technologies.
- See the direct impact of your work through measurable improvements in accuracy, adoption and efficiency.
- Help shape data governance and AI best practices as the platform develops.
It's a particularly interesting opportunity for a data engineer who has developed strong LLM/RAG skills and wants to move into a role with greater ownership of applied AI.
Interested?
If you're a data engineer with hands-on LLM/RAG experience and want to work on production AI systems with genuine business impact, I'd be keen to speak with you.
